Pawsitive Change is getting closer to reopening our programs at Wasco State Prison and Bakersfield Juvenile Justice—bringing shelter dogs and justice-involved people together to create purpose, hope, skills, and second chances on both ends of the leash.

Out of sight. Out of mind.

Animal shelters and prisons exist in the shadowy recesses of our society—places most of us will never see from the inside.

Behind shelter walls are dogs who have been abandoned, misunderstood and overlooked. Many are running out of time.

Behind prison walls are people searching for purpose, responsibility and an opportunity to become more than their worst decisions.

Pawsitive Change brings these two worlds together.

We take dogs at risk of euthanasia and pair them with incarcerated trainers who teach them how to trust, communicate and become confident companions.

We’re not just helping dogs get adopted. We’re giving them the skills to get adopted—and stay adopted.

And along the way, both dog and trainer learn trust, patience, accountability and purpose.

Now we’re working to expand that impact with new programs at Wasco State Prison and in Bakersfield’s juvenile justice system.

Four months ago, I returned to Marley’s Mutts knowing that saving this organization would be extraordinarily difficult. We faced a major monthly deficit, rising expenses, and the loss of substantial recurring revenue after changes to our previous donation platform prevented many monthly gifts from being retained.

But our team refused to give up.

Together, our board, staff, volunteers, fosters, donors, and supporters have dramatically reduced expenses, brought the organization close to a balanced monthly budget, improved care at the ranch, strengthened our foster and adoption efforts, secured new grants and partnerships, and continued our lifesaving rescue and Pawsitive Change programs.

I could not be prouder of everyone who has worked so hard and sacrificed so much to stabilize Marley’s Mutts. We have made tremendous progress, but we still need your help.

Recurring donations provide dependable funding for food, veterinary care, transportation, ranch operations, and programs that transform lives on both ends of the leash. Even $10 or $20 a month makes an enormous difference.

WE CANNOT RESCUE OUR WAY OUT OF THIS.

We can pull one more dog. Open one more kennel. Find one more foster. Save one more life.

And we will.

But until we change the culture that fills our shelters in the first place, there will always be another dog waiting behind the one we just saved.

The answer is prevention.

Spay and neuter. Adopt instead of shop. Foster. Volunteer. Support responsible pet ownership. And make a lifelong commitment when you bring an animal home.

Marley’s Mutts wants to be more than a rescue. We want to be a community epicenter for advocating for man’s best friend—a place that saves lives, educates, creates solutions and inspires people to become part of the answer.

They are called man’s best friend for a reason.

They give us loyalty, companionship, forgiveness and unconditional love. We believe our responsibility is to honor that relationship—not allow healthy, adoptable animals to die simply because there aren’t enough homes.

We will keep rescuing.

But the ultimate victory isn’t pulling more dogs from shelters.

It’s creating a world where fewer dogs ever need rescuing in the first place.

Today, we say goodbye to someone who has been such an important part of the Marley’s Mutts family for the past five years. ❤️🐾
Danielle, while we are so incredibly sad to see you go and will miss you dearly, we are also beyond excited for you and this amazing new opportunity and the next chapter in your life!
Over the years, your dedication to animal welfare and your love for dogs have been truly inspiring. Rescue is not easy. There are hard days, heartbreaking days, exhausting days, and days when it can feel like the weight of it all is too much. But through it all, you continued to show up day after day with a positive, loving attitude.
You always made sure the staff was okay. You made sure the dogs were okay. And most importantly, you made sure they were loved, cared for, and enriched—even on the days when you may have been feeling defeated yourself. You have always had a way of putting others first, and that says so much about the incredible person you are.
you have such a special light about you. You bring joy, kindness, laughter, and love wherever you go, and Marley’s Mutts has been so lucky to have you as part of our team.
Because of you, your dedication, and all of your hard work over these past five years, we have been able to get through so much. You have made a difference in the lives of countless dogs and people, and your impact here will never be forgotten.
Thank you for everything you have given to Marley’s Mutts. Thank you for the long days, the hard work, the love you poured into the dogs, and for always being such an amazing coworker and friend.
