The Summit Chapter of the Christ Child Society was originally chartered in 1929, and retired in 1999 after 70 years of service. In 2006, our previous president heard about the Christ Child Society and was intrigued about the group. Sitting on the beach, she heard from college friends in Washington, DC about many of the good deeds of the National Christ Child Society. Knowing there was a need in Su

mmit, the chapter was re-established and due to an enthusiastic response, Summit’s membership now boasts over 110 and continues to grow, as women throughout the area dedicate themselves to providing aid and supplies to at-risk children in Summit and neighboring towns. The Summit Chapter was granted its charter at the National CCS Convention in Cleveland in September of 2010.

Our Annual Baby Shower Luncheon was a lovely event. Thank you to all who came to support our mission and donated funds and layette items for our Layette Program. This year’s Mary Virginia Merrick award was given to Sue Flannery Huffman, Marianne Connor, and Sarah Walker who run our Layette Program, and Regina Feeney, who has co-chaired our Blankets for Babies program. We appreciate them, and the work they do on behalf of children. Pictured in the first photo are Sue and Marianne, with Lois Melka, CCS President. In the 2nd photo is Maria Velasquez-Knight MSW, LSW, our contact at Overlook Hospital’s HealthStart Clinic for almost 20 years, and Lois. Thank you to our event co-chairs Natalie Petrides and Marilee Klaschka (in 3rd photo) who organized a wonderful day! maryvirginiamerrickaward

Summit Elks Lodge 1246 hosted a “Blankets for Babies” night where Elks and Christ Child Society members came together to put the finishing touches on fleece blankets which will be included in layette bundles given to under resourced babies at the HealthStart clinics at Overlook and Morristown hospitals. A grant from the Elks National Foundation underwrites the purchase of fleece needed to make hundreds of blankets each year. We are so grateful to the Elks for their ongoing community partnership and for supporting our layette program.

Thank you once again to the Summit Luminary Fund for their generous grant to the following programs run by the Christ Child Society of Summit: ABC Area Baby Center Diaper Distribution, Layette Program, Toddler Clothing Program, and School Supplies & Back Pack Program. These funds will help hundreds of under-resourced children and their families at a time when they need it most. We are so grateful and blessed to be a part of such a giving community. Thank you to everyone who donated and purchased luminaries and to Lois Schneider Realtors who generously underwrites the luminary supplies each year. Pictured are Barbara Romano, founder of the Summit Luminary Fund, and Lois Melka, CCS President.

We had a great time during our Readers to Leaders visit this week. We read and discussed The Mitten by Jan Brett, worked on a related craft, and had a snack with 3 classrooms filled with charming pre-schoolers. Every child received a book of their own to bring home. Daily reading, starting from birth, significantly improves vocabulary, school performance, and graduation rates.
