So honored . . .

Congratulations to the Door County Historical Society (DCHS) on receiving the 2026 Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy for Excellence in Local History! This recognition is especially meaningful as the DCHS celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

One of the most significant achievements of the past five years has been the long-awaited restoration work at Eagle Bluff Light Station, one of Door County’s most beloved historic landmarks.

Beyond preservation, DCHS has significantly expanded its public programming and community engagement efforts. Signature events such as the Root B**r Festival and Apple Festival have grown into beloved community traditions, attracting hundreds of visitors and introducing new audiences to local history.

DCHS has also developed new educational programs and revived former programs. Together, these programs have helped bring tens of thousands of visitors annually to DCHS sites.

Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of DCHS’s work is that its impact extends beyond its own programs and sites.

The Society has played a leading role in strengthening collaboration among the many history-focused organizations throughout Door County. Door County History Days is a wonderful example. This countywide celebration brings together museums, historical societies, libraries, and cultural organizations to present tours, programs, and events across the peninsula.

Door County History Trail is another example of an initiative that has fostered a spirit of cooperation among local cultural organizations and created richer and more comprehensive historical experiences for the public.

Through restoration initiatives, innovative programming, regional partnerships, and sustained community support, the Society has demonstrated that history is not simply something to be studied. It is something to be lived, experienced, and celebrated.

The Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy recognizes an affiliated historical organization for continued excellence and overall service to its community over a period of at least five years.

The Thwaites Trophy was presented at Door County Historical Society’s Heritage Village on September 9th. Tricia and Christian were our two representatives present for the award presentation.

CLOSING FOR SEASON
A big thank you to everyone who volunteered and visited Heritage Village this past summer. Tomorrow, will be our last day open to the public. Saturday we will be open for our Spooky Wisconsin program from 5:30pm-7:00pm. The program will be from 6:00pm until 7:00pm.

Saturday morning, from 10:00am until Noon we will be sweeping and placing some of our items in storage. If you can help-even for an hour-please meet at the Greene Store.

Hope to see you in DECEMBER for our CHRISTMAS WEEKENDS!

Final days to tour Eagle Bluff Light Station before we close for the year on October 31. What a year it's been! 🥰

Eagle Bluff Light Station will be closed on Saturday, October 24 for the Fall 50. We will reopen Sunday, Oct 25 - Saturday, Oct 31 when we will close for the season. Thanks for a great year . . . we'll see you in the spring!
