This week from DGDC President/CEO/Current Board President Cynthia Germain:

"One of the things I hear most often when talking with older adults is that retirement is not always what they expected.

It isn’t necessarily about money. It isn’t always about staying busy. More often, it is about something deeper: wanting to continue contributing, sharing knowledge, and making a difference."

"The beautiful stretch of weather we’ve been enjoying seems to be carrying us right into Memorial Day weekend…a holiday that has been observed in this country since 1868. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began after the Civil War as a way to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in that devastating conflict. Over the years, it has become a day to remember and honor all Americans who died while serving in the military.

For many people, Memorial Day marks the.."

"May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on something that affects every one of us, regardless of age…our emotional wellbeing.

When we talk about healthy aging, conversations often focus on physical health. We talk about exercise, nutrition, medications, doctor visits, and staying safe at home. But mental health is just as important to our quality of life as we age, and it is often the part we discuss the least."

As Mother’s Day approaches, many of us find ourselves thinking about women who shaped our lives…the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers and mentors whose resilience, love and nurturing stay with us no matter how many years pass.

Supporting not only women but everyone as they age remains at the heart of our mission: Dedicated to building a dynamic, collaborative community which will enhance, enrich and respect the aging experience in Door County.

During this third year of building our programs, your difference-making commitment and generosity can help us keep growing!

Give Now: With a donation of any amount, you can help older adults continue living safely in their homes, stay healthy and active, and remain connected in their communities.

Volunteer: Gifts of time are meaningful, too! Join our board or advisory council to help strengthen and advance our work. Get involved with one of our program work groups and ask a family member or friend to join you. Contact us at 920-659-5159 or [email protected] to learn about opportunities that match your interests and fit with your schedule.

As the season changes and the flowers bloom, it is a reminder that aging is a privilege, and the wisdom and determination of women who guided us continues to have an impact. Wherever you find yourself this year, here are my reflections that I hope help you think of ways to celebrate aging and Mother’s Day.

Wishing you connection with those who matter most and appreciation for the generations of women who helped shape our lives.

With gratitude,

Cynthia Germain

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s an invitation to pause and reflect on the women who raised us, shaped us, and, in so many ways, continue to guide us. It’s also an opportunity to think about what it means to age, and how we honor that journey.

Mothers often wear the titles of love, sacrifice, and devotion invisibly. They show up, day after day… nurturing, teaching, calming. And while our relationships with them may evolve over time, what they’ve given us tends to stay rooted deep within us.

This week from the desk of Do Good Door County Founder/Board President/CEO Cynthia Germain:

"Ah, the wonderful journey of aging. They say age is just a number but that number has a way of introducing itself through stiff joints, sore muscles, and the occasional reminder that our bodies are keeping score. And as the years add up, so do the little surprises that come along for the ride."
