On this day June 14, 1777 Congress officially approved the design of the first United States Flag. It was adopted as having 13 stripes and 13 stars to represent the 13 colonies that had been created to ultimately form the United States of America. Folklore tells us that George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross to create the first flag, although that cannot be proven nor dismissed.
In 1916 President Wilson established June 14 as a National day to honor our flag by proclamation. President Truman Signed it into law in 1949.
Originally the 13 stripes were to be alternate red and white and the Union be 13 stars on a field of blue representing a new constellation and the stars were sewn in a circle. Until 1912 the arrangement of the stars were placed and designed and varied as to the way the seamstress wanted to place them. Then President Taft set a standard of the layout of the 48 stars into 6 rows of 8 when Arizona became a state. The current version of the flag dates to July 4, 1960. To date there have been 27 official versions of the flag of the United States of America

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.
On this Memorial Day, may we reflect with gratitude, cherish the freedoms we enjoy, and keep the families of our fallen heroes in our hearts. Their legacy lives on in the spirit of this nation. 🇺🇸
