One of the things we love most about Sara Cunningham’s story is that she didn’t start out as an LGBTQ+ advocate.

She started out as a mom.

A mom who loved her son deeply but struggled when he came out as gay. Raised in a conservative Christian environment, Sara has been very honest about the fact that she initially responded with fear, denial, and resistance. Her son tried to come out to her more than once, and she wasn’t ready to hear him.

But love kept calling her forward.

Instead of letting her fear stop her, she chose to learn. She listened. She asked questions. She wrestled with what she had always been taught. She learned that the good and right thing was to love her son unconditionally and wholeheartedly affirm and celebrate him.

In 2015, Sara attended an Oklahoma City Pride event wearing a homemade button that said “Free Mom Hugs.” She began offering hugs to anyone who wanted one. What she encountered changed her forever. She met LGBTQ+ people who had been rejected by their families, some who hadn’t been hugged by their own parents in years. Those conversations and tears became the spark that eventually grew into Free Mom Hugs.

That’s why the quote in this picture means so much.

Because Sara knows firsthand that one accepting parent can change a life.

One conversation can change a life.

One act of love can change a life.

Many in the Mama Bear community see their own stories reflected in hers. Most moms of LGBTQ+ kids weren’t handed a map. They simply loved their children enough to keep listening, keep learning, and keep showing up.

And every Pride season reminds me that the ripple effects of that love are immeasurable.

A conversation can change a family.

A family can change a community.

And communities can change the world.

Every child deserves to grow up knowing they are loved exactly as they are. For trans kids, that love and acceptance can mean the difference between surviving and thriving. Support is not complicated—it’s listening, affirming, standing beside them, and reminding them every single day that who they are is something to be celebrated. 🏳️‍⚧️✨

When a child’s journey begins with unconditional love, their future is filled with possibility. They learn to spread their wings, to dream, to grow without shame, and to carry pride in their identity. 🌈

Let’s be the safe arms, the listening ears, and the open hearts that every trans child deserves. Because acceptance isn’t just kindness—it’s life-giving. 💖

NEW RULE:

You don’t have to understand someone’s identity in order to treat them with dignity and respect.

In a world where people are constantly being told they must explain, justify, or defend who they are, let’s remember something simple:

You can choose to be kind and compassionate before you understand everything.

You can choose respect before you know what you think.

You can choose to honor someone’s humanity even when their experience is different from your own.

That’s not complicated.
That’s just being a decent human being.

Happy father's day to all yall peeps with wonderful fathers!

Happy father's day to all yall peeps with wonderful fathers!

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads and fathering people! 🫶💐

A father’s love and support has a major impact on those in the LGBTQ+ community. Whether you’re an LGBTQ+ dad, an ally dad, a chosen dad, a supportive granddad, a trans dad, a gender nonconforming dad, or any other kind of father figure, we celebrate you and are PFLAG proud of you. 🏳️‍🌈

On this day in 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed, as declared by the Emancipation Proclamation signed a full two and a half years prior. Known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and most commonly referred to as Juneteenth, this anniversary is cause for celebration as well as reflection.

The history of the United States is one riddled with battles for freedom, justice, and equality. Our African American loved ones, including and especially those who are LGBTQ+, still fight discrimination due to their marginalized identities.

Our PFLAG Connects: Black/African American Community offers virtual meetings for parents, family members, and members of the LGBTQ+ community who are Black or African American. To those seeking connection and understanding, visit pflag.org/connects/communities/black

PFLAG National is closed today to celebrate and honor Juneteenth. ❤️🖤💚💛
