Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize last Friday.

She chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry that concluded in 2025 that Israel committed genocide in Gaza. When people kept praising her courage for saying it, she asked why telling the truth should take courage at all.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day from St. Louis, which sits on the homelands of the Osage, Missouria, and Illini peoples.

In 1808, the Osage signed a treaty at Fort Osage that gave most of present-day Missouri to the United States. Indian Country Today reports the treaty covered about 52.5 million acres across Missouri and Arkansas. By 1825, more treaties had taken the rest.
The Osage Nation is still here, and so are Native people in St. Louis today.

Our Executive Director Katerina Canyon was recently named a Fulbright Specialist!

She's already landed in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to help build curriculum for digital storytelling, streaming media, and OTT production. She'll be working with education professors there on student-led media projects.

The U.S. and China have talked about letting each other's officials visit their nuclear facilities, according to CNN and Reuters.

Site visits sound small. They could keep a misread missile test from turning into a catastrophe.

China's arsenal is growing fast. SIPRI estimates about 620 warheads. New START, the last treaty limiting U.S. and Russian arsenals, expired in February. Some people want to answer with more weapons. Katerina argues for inspectors, hotlines and phone calls instead, the quiet tools that have kept nuclear rivals away from the edge before.

$496 million. That's what the Congressional Budget Office says National Guard deployments to U.S. cities cost in 2025. Washington, D.C. alone ran $223 million.
The CBO also says putting 1,000 Guard troops in a city costs $18 to $21 million a month.

Missouri has had its own Guard activations this year, and our Domestic Militarization Watch is tracking them.
