Some years back we met with the Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser to ask: How can we give youth in the justice system a real second chance and he also was wrestling with that question?
By February of 24, the planning was underway and we had somewhat of a plan. Through our new partnership with the State’s Attorney’s Office, Sangamon County Court Services, Probations and IDHS, minors who complete The Outlet’s program and stay on a positive path will not have charges that brung them into the program held against them.
We’re excited to share that our first cohort of youth, had a graduation two weeks ago. We had 13 SUCCESSFULLY graduates. We wish, we could say, that all of them graduated, but we can’t, but we are excited for the ones that did and we are still working with the ones that are still plugging away. We had some success, but also learn a lot along the way and will make adjustments as we move forward.
This is a rare opportunity and we love this work. We know that everyone doesn’t believe in this type of work or grace. No one has ever needed forgiveness, fresh start or any type of reset. However, as an organization, whose roots are founding in grace and mercy…WE DO, believe in it.
We are also thankful for the team of Ms. Ann, Ms.Tyra, Ms.Jamila, Ms.Carly, Mr.Coop, Mr.Zayin, Mr.Shaun, Mr.Tim 2.0, Mr.Tim 1.0, Mr.Brandon, Mr.Nick, Mr.Bobby, Mr.Richard and Mr.Freddie. One of the best teams in the city.
More details to come as continue to roll this out.
