Why the Ghostbusters Logo Works Without a Single Word.

In 1984, American designer and film producer Michael C. Gross helped create one of cinema's most recognisable symbols: the Ghostbusters No-Ghost logo.

Working with artist Brent Boates, Gross developed Dan Aykroyd's original concept into a striking visual identity.

A startled white ghost, a red prohibition circle, and a diagonal slash. Three simple elements that communicated the film's premise without a single word.

Originally developed for the Ghostbusters' uniforms and Ecto-1 vehicle, the emblem quickly became inseparable from the franchise.

Gross was already an accomplished art director, having worked at National Lampoon, where he created the notorious “If You Don't Buy This Magazine, We'll Kill This Dog” cover.

For Ghostbusters II in 1989, he revisited the symbol, introducing the ghost's now-famous two-fingered gesture.
