Leadership begins with self-awareness.

This month, 18 young men stepped into the Journeymen Leadership Academy with a commitment to learn more about themselves, challenge one another, and reflect on how they show up in the world.

Through honest conversations, meaningful connection, and intentional leadership development, these young men are building the confidence, character, and accountability that will shape the leaders they become.

At Boys to Men Mentoring, we believe leadership isn't about having all the answers—it's about having the courage to grow.

We're proud of these 18 Journeymen for taking that next step. 💙

Last weekend, 10 boys and 5 mentors from Boys to Men Mentoring spent the day serving at Rachel's Promise Center for Women and Children — sanding, prepping, and painting the shelter's kitchen.

Rachel's Promise is a place of hope and healing for women who have experienced domestic violence and homelessness, providing shelter, meals, and personalized support to help them rebuild their lives.

Before the work began, Co-Founder Joe Sigurdson gathered the group:

"Today, you are doing men's work. You are choosing to be responsible, generous, hardworking young men who are willing to serve others."

As the circle ended, a resident approached with tears in her eyes.

"God bless you and these fine young men. You have no idea what this means to us."

Mentorship isn't just about helping boys grow — it's about inspiring them to become men who lift others up.

Service. Compassion. Leadership. That's the Boys to Men way.

🥾🌿 Adventure is calling! We kicked off our first hiking excursion of the summer with an unforgettable day at Mission Trails Regional Park. With beautiful weather, fresh air, and great conversations along the trail, our boys experienced the power of unplugging, connecting with nature, and building friendships—one step at a time. Thank you to the wonderful B2M staff and mentors that led the way.

Last week at Law Street, we kicked off our first surf night of the season with our boys, mentors, and staff.

For many of these young men, life has already delivered more wipeouts than most people ever experience. But the ocean has a way of reminding us that falling isn't failing.

Every wave is a fresh start. Every paddle back out is an act of courage.

As we count down to the 17th Annual 100 Wave Challenge this September, our boys aren't just learning to surf. They're learning to trust themselves, face fear, and believe they can get back up—again and again—with a community behind them.

The ocean doesn't change who they are. It reminds them of who they've always been capable of becoming.

The ocean heals. Community heals. Mentorship heals. 🤙

More surf nights to come. See you on the water.

On June 11, more than 120 members of the Boys to Men family—including boys, family members, mentors, community partners, and staff—gathered at the WorldBeat Cultural Center for an evening of celebration, connection, and recognition. Guests enjoyed dinner from La Patrona Mexican Food Truck, music by DJ Blue Bandido, a healing drum circle, and a spirited karaoke competition. The evening's highlight was honoring our Journeymen for their commitment and personal growth, followed by exciting giveaways from Dr. Bronner's and Raising Cane's.

Congratulations to Tomas, who won a brand-new e-bike donated by Larry Kesslin . Night of Gratitude was a beautiful reminder of the strength, joy, and community that make Boys to Men so special.

Every week, Boys to Men shows up for boys who need connection, guidance, and support. Recently, Bonsall High School Principal Angela James shared this with our team:

“You have provided our students with something many of them desperately need: trusted adults who listen without judgment, challenge them to be their best selves, and remind them that they matter.”

For the past five years, Boys to Men has supported students at Sullivan Middle School and Bonsall High School — and today we serve young men at 34 schools across San Diego County.

As more schools continue reaching out for support, we’re excited to soon launch our Sponsor a School Program — giving our community the opportunity to help bring Boys to Men mentoring to even more boys who need it most. 💙

This month, Boys to Men Mentoring hosted another Adventure Mountain Weekend — a transformative experience with 16 initiates and nearly 60 participants focused on growth, healing, accountability, and connection. ⛰️🔥

During this rite of passage, boys step into Journeymen — a powerful transition where they begin becoming the good men they want to be.

In the final circle, each young man shares what he’s learned and the commitments he’s making at home, from difficult conversations with parents to addressing substance use and beginning to heal from trauma and past experiences.

We close with a symbolic burning of regrets and fears, allowing them to leave the weekend unburdened, energized, and ready to move forward with purpose. 💙

The boys in the B2M program at Roosevelt Middle School recently visited the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center — a world-class facility where Team USA athletes train for Olympic and Paralympic competition. 🇺🇸

The trip gave the boys a firsthand look at the discipline, dedication, and hard work it takes to compete at the highest level, while inspiring them to pursue greatness in their own lives. Thank you to the staff for an awesome afternoon. 💙

Mentor Spotlight: John Kenny 👏

For the second year, John Kenny has served as a co-facilitator for the boys at Avela Oaks and Diegueño Middle Schools through Boys to Men Mentoring, showing up consistently to support and guide young men in our community.

To celebrate the boys’ hard work and growth this year, John treated the group to a fun day at K1 Speed 🏁 — recognizing them for stepping up and becoming the men they are capable of being.

Thank you, John, for your leadership and commitment to the next generation. 💙
