LET'S PLAN FOR THE SPOKANE FAIR!
This week's 4-H Still Life Spotlight is Poetry and Creative Writing!
This year, the Spokane County Interstate Fair invites us to celebrate “Spokane’s Legacy and America’s Spirit,” and the 4-H Still Life Department theme, “Head, Heart, Hands, Health — The American Way,” brings that message to life through creativity and storytelling.
For 4-H fair entries with an "America’s Birthday" theme, creative writing and poetry projects can combine historical reflection, personal tradition, and artistic expression. Suitable ideas include writing personal, sensory-rich poetry about fireworks or parades, crafting acrostic poems for "Independence Day," or creating stories about family 4th of July traditions.
Poetry and Display and Presentation Ideas,
• Writing in a Jar: Present a collection of short patriotic poems or stories inside a decorated red, white, and blue mason jar.
• Poetry Poster: Combine a poem with watercolor or ink illustrations of American symbols (e.g., eagle, flag, fireworks).
• "It's a Tradition": Write a personal narrative describing your family's specific 4th of July traditions, including favorite foods, games, and locations.
• The Perfect Barbeque: Create a descriptive piece planning the ultimate 4th of July picnic, focusing on sensory details of the food and atmosphere.
