Communities In Schools of Northeast Washington Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

We connect resources to vulnerable students at targeted schools--this can be as basic as food security or as complex as placing them in a one-on-one relationship with a mentor. By offering the right services to the right students at the right time, we are freeing up the teachers to do what they do best, teach! We also help set students up for college readiness classes.

We'd like to give a huge thank you to Shawn Erickson, owner of & Roy's Repair inc., for spending time with students at .knights last spring and sharing his experience in the automotive industry.

Have you ever sat in a class wondering, "When am I ever going to use this?"
That's how school often felt for one student in particular and the impact of Shawn's talk was undeniable.
Because when the conversation turned to cars, everything changed.
This student was engaged, eager to answer questions, and stayed afterward to learn even more.

That moment is exactly why community partnerships matter.
When students have the opportunity to connect with caring adults who share their passions, they begin to see new possibilities for themselves.

For many students, changing schools is stressful.

Imagine doing it five times in five years.

When one fifth grader in foster care arrived at Orchard Center Elementary near the end of the school year, he had already spent years moving between homes and schools. Trusting new people didn't come easily, and he wasn't convinced he'd find friends or feel like he belonged.

So we started with something simple:

💙 Lunch together.
💙 Casual conversations.
💙 A safe place to stop by for a snack, a pair of shoes, or simply someone who cared.

Little by little, things changed.

Today, he's proudly talking about the five friends he's made, classroom conflicts have decreased, and he's excited to start sixth grade at Centennial Middle School alongside his new best friend.

The best part?

His journey doesn't end here.
As he moves from Orchard Center to Centennial, he'll continue to be supported by a Communities In Schools Student Support Coordinator—providing one more consistent relationship in a life that's seen far too much change.

We’re kicking things off with our Tools2Schools Sort & Distribution Day at the MLK Community Center, and there’s still time to make an impact!

📍 MLK Community Center - 500 S. Stone St.
🕛 TODAY | 12–4 PM
🎒 School supply donations will be accepted throughout the event!

Have backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, new PE shoes, basics, snacks, or other new school supplies to give? Bring them by!
Every donation helps us make sure local students have the tools they need to start the school year strong. 💛
