UPDATE - SSH Cemetery Memorial Committee
The Spencer State Hospital Cemetery Memorial Committee of the Roane County Historical Society, Inc., Spencer, WV was formed in October 2025 to re-investigate the possibility of erecting a visible memorial to the 265 patients buried in the Cem. #2 area, 1936-1964. We propose that the names & dates of those patients will be engraved on paving-style bricks on a fittingly designed monument. The land where the cemetery is located has been owned by the Roane County Board of Education since 1981. We had to receive permission to proceed with project. The Committee met with the BoE and asked their support in erecting the memorial. On February 19, 2026, the Board of Education representative reported, "Your committee can move forward. The board voted unanimously on the project." Since then, the Committee has been reaching out to contractors to design & build the memorial. To avoid speculation, we do not have anything more to report at this time, but hope to announce the design/builder contractor soon! Linda Cottrell Liss, RCHS-Cemetery Memorial Committee, Chairperson. May 16th Meeting: Only 7 members attended the May meeting. Membership committee chairman Linda Liss reported that the Society as lost a member and gained one new member leaving the total at 100. Corresponding Secretary reported that she has mailed get well and thinking of you cards to members Bonita Schreckengost and organizing member Carol Board-Westfall. Treasurer report filed with the minutes for audit indicated the present bank balance is $3,872.83. Newletter committee chairman reported that the Summer newsletter may be her last newsletter, due to lack of material submitted by members. She had ask for Family Pedigree Charts and has received none. A book sale is planned for September. This will take the place of the fair usually held in September. The date is September 26th and will be at the Roane County Library. Spencer State Hospital Cemetery Memorial Committee reported they have design requests in but have not heard back. Brick printing prices might run around 5-6 Thousand Dollars. The members discussed fund raising options. Check the Spencer State Hospital page for more info. The next meeting will be June 20th and will be held at the Roane County Library at 1:00 p.m.

We did NOT have a meeting this month! No quorum. Our society needs members if we are to continue to exist. Next month we meet on May 16th, 1:00 p.m. at the Roane County Library.
