𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀? In an opinion piece published in the "International Journal of Healing and Caring," CRR director Ann Baldwin explores the exciting possibilities—and important limitations—of bringing AI into the world of Reiki. From wearable technology that tracks physiological responses to personalized healing environments, predictive tools, and AI-guided meditation, emerging technologies could offer new ways to understand the effects of Reiki and enhance the client experience. But how far can technology go when it comes to healing?

Baldwin argues that while AI may be a powerful tool for advancing Reiki research and personalizing sessions, it cannot replace the human connection at the heart of Reiki practice. AI cannot transmit Reiki, sense a client’s subtle needs, or replicate the intuition, presence, and compassion of a human practitioner. Her message is clear: the future may lie not in replacing Reiki practitioners, but in thoughtfully combining technology with human wisdom to enrich the healing experience—while protecting client privacy, consent, and trust.

How does emerging biofield therapy research change as it moves from scientific publications into Reddit discussions, YouTube videos, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and online articles?

At CRR's virtual International Reiki Research Conference on October 3rd, 𝗗𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝘂𝗮𝗻 and 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗼 will present a qualitative analysis of how biofield research is communicated across publicly accessible digital media. The study examined 205 communication instances and identified patterns including 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗿𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The findings offer an important look at the gap between 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. Scientifically accurate communication appeared in 66% of analyzed media items, particularly among healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and science journalism sources. Community-generated content more frequently included overstatement, rhetorical framing, and cross-modality generalization.

The analysis also led to the development of a practical 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁—designed to help researchers, practitioners, educators, and content creators communicate emerging evidence with greater clarity, accuracy, and responsibility.

The study asked: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼-𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?

Across three independent experiments, cultures received 0, 2, 4, or 6 cumulative sessions. At 2, 4, and 6 sessions, 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗸𝗶-𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝟭𝟰𝟵% 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟳𝟲% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮𝟳𝟴% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼—𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟰𝟲% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

📈 The growth trajectories showed an interesting pattern: as cumulative exposure increased, the placebo and no-treatment groups rose more steeply, while the Reiki-treated trajectory remained lower. The separation appeared after two sessions and persisted through four and six sessions.

⚠️ What does this mean? These are exploratory findings, not proof of an effect. The number of independent experiments was small, and individual contrasts were not statistically significant. The results point to a question worth investigating further with larger, adequately powered studies.
