SEIU International President April Verrett released the following statement on the death of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association:

"I've spent all morning thinking about what it takes to be the person in the room who keeps pushing after everyone else has made peace with the way things are. Dolores Huerta was that person for more than seventy years.

She started out as a teacher. She saw children coming to school hungry, and she couldn't look away, so she went out to organize their parents. She raised her own kids on picket lines. She sat across the table from some of the most powerful growers in this country and walked out with contracts that changed farmworkers' lives. And for much of that time, the credit went to someone else. She kept going anyway, because the work was never about her.

That's what I want young people to know about Dolores. You don't have to wait for someone to hand you a title or give you permission. You don't need the spotlight to matter. Dolores gave a whole movement its words, ¡Sí, se puede!, and she meant every one of them. Yes, we can. Not someday, not when conditions are perfect. Now, with what we have.

Dolores understood something our movement can never forget: no one wins alone. Farmworkers and teachers, nurses and janitors, immigrant families and civil rights organizers, women demanding a seat at the table, our fights are united as one.

Our SEIU family knows that better than most, because Dolores showed up for us again and again. She marched with fast food workers in the Fight for $15. She stood on our picket lines and at our rallies. At 89, she was arrested alongside SEIU home care workers in Fresno, demanding a raise for the people who care for our elders. Our members, so many of them women and immigrants doing work this country can't live without, see themselves in her story. We stand where we stand because she stood first, and because she kept standing with us.

So let's honor her the way she'd want. Not with a moment of silence and then business as usual, but by doing the work.

To her children and grandchildren and the whole Huerta family, to the Dolores Huerta Foundation, and to every farmworker carrying her fight forward: we are holding you in our hearts. Rest well, Dolores. You did your part. Now it's our turn."

Still thinking about last weekend.

On Saturday, SEIU Michigan members rallied with Garlin Gilchrist and Donavan McKinney in Detroit, knocked doors for pro-worker candidates, and capped off the day at a rally featuring Barack Obama, Abdul El-Sayed and Jocelyn Benson.

We’re just days away from Election Day. Our members are putting in the work to turn out voters and elect leaders who will stand up for working people, protect health care and put our families ahead of corporate profits. Let’s finish strong.

One union, one fight! Shout out to our members at Trinity Health in Muskegon who are at the bargaining table right now fighting for union rights, safe staffing and fair, competitive wages. Healthcare workers deserve respect, safe working conditions and a contract that reflects the value of the care they provide.

Michigan Medicine has fired 33 United Contact Center workers since May following secret call audits and investigations. We’re challenging these unjust terminations and serious unfair labor practices, and calling on the Board of Regents to respect workers’ contractual rights.

Two days. Four stops. One message: We’re sick of it! SEIU Healthcare Michigan members joined Care Force One in Warren, Flint, Lansing and Kalamazoo for the Sick of It! Fix Health Care Now bus tour, sharing stories and demanding action.

Anti-worker politicians in Washington passed the largest Medicaid cuts in U.S. history to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Those cuts put care at risk for millions, threaten the jobs of home care workers, and will leave many families struggling to find the care they need. At the same time, rising health insurance premiums are putting coverage almost out of reach for working people.

Our members took this message directly to communities across the state to make sure the people paying the price are heard. We’re sick of a healthcare system that puts profits over people. It’s time to fix it.

Yesterday, SEIU Healthcare Michigan members attended the University of Michigan Board of Regents meeting in Flint to speak out against the unjust terminations and disciplinary actions at the United Contact Center at Michigan Medicine.

Since May, 33 call center workers have been terminated following secret call audits and investigations that the university refuses to share with the Union. These terminations violated the workers’ collective bargaining agreement, which guarantees just cause and progressive discipline, and constitute serious unfair labor practices - including bad faith bargaining, unilateral changes in terms and conditions of employment, and failure to provide information legally required under Michigan law.

Our demands are clear: Return the terminated workers to their jobs, and restore their dignity and pay. Respect progressive discipline and workers’ contractual rights.
