Protec Michigan

Protec Michigan We fight on their behalf & citizens PROTEC has represented jurisdictions of all sizes through coordinated lobbying efforts at both the state and federal level.

PROTEC is the watchdog in Michigan making telecom companies accountable for rent they owe local government for the use of publicly owned property and their right to receive fair compensation use publicly owned property. When founded, PROTEC's founders were responding to changes in Michigan laws which threatened to give telecommunications companies free, unrestricted access to public roads and ease

ments. Such uncontrolled access threatened (and continues to threaten) the safety, health, and well being of every Michigan resident and business. Since PROTEC's formation, the residents and businesses of numerous cities, villages and townships have benefited from the allied efforts of the coalition. PROTEC has expanded its efforts to meet the needs of every Michigan city, village and township, including dealing with concerns over public right-of-way usage by gas and electric companies.

In the warm halls of the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island in June of 1996, then Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido huddled with his legal and policy counsel and MML leadership and urged the creation of a new entity that could be a strong voice for local control of our ROW in the face of then recent efforts by the telecommunications industry to install a new kind of communication lines called “optical fiber” in the City Rights Of Way.

For Free. And, without regulation.

Livonia, Southfield and a dozen other communities joined the effort. Within a few years, over 100 communities joined up and almost 500 follow PROTEC from across the country.

Politicians continue to believe cutting out more and more regulations and responsibility for telecoms. And yet prices to continue to rise and we have yet to see those prices drive downward.

Streaming companies are discovering that their most valuable customers may not be the ones paying the most. Instead, it’s increasingly the viewers who watch the most.

The change is being driven by a move away from a subscription-only model to one that combines subscription fees with advertising. Because ads are sold based on viewership, the more time a subscriber spends watching, the more revenue that viewer generates.
