**From San Diego Fusion to an AI-Powered Lifesupport Network for Los Angeles**
The next great application of the fusion revolution may not be on Mars. It may begin right here in Southern California.
San Diego is already a major center of U.S. fusion research. General Atomics operates the DIII-D National Fusion Facility, the largest magnetic-fusion research facility in the United States, and is now advancing plans for a full-scale fusion blanket test facility to address critical engineering challenges on the path toward commercial fusion power.
The Mars Society Pasadena Chapter proposes exploring a long-term **San Diego–Los Angeles Fusion & Water Resilience Corridor**, with Pasadena serving as an initial demonstration and coordination hub.
The concept is straightforward:

**Clean Electricity + Water Production + Storage**

The objective would be to develop the capability to power advanced water purification, recycling, desalination where appropriate, groundwater recharge, pumping and strategic water storage with future clean, firm energy.
But the larger opportunity is even more important.
# # # Stargate AI: Lifesupport for Southern California
The proposed **Stargate AI** initiative can serve as the intelligent coordination layer for this infrastructure.
Its initial mission should be practical and humanitarian:
**Police • Fire • EMS • Utilities • Water • Communications • Emergency Management**
The system could ultimately integrate authorized information from participating agencies to help coordinate emergency response, infrastructure status, water availability, evacuation support, power resilience and recovery operations.
Rather than replacing the people who protect our communities, AI would help give those people a better picture of what is happening across the region and where resources are needed most.
The immediate application is particularly relevant to the communities rebuilding after the devastating Los Angeles-area fires.
Pasadena, South Pasadena, Alhambra, Arcadia, Monterey Park and Altadena represent an opportunity to develop a **regional pilot for community lifesupport and resilience infrastructure** while reconstruction is underway.
# # # A Long-Term Vision
We envision a phased program:
**Phase 1 — 2026–2027:**
Develop the Stargate AI emergency-services and infrastructure coordination framework with local communities and public-safety stakeholders.
**Phase 2 — 2027–2030:**
Establish a Pasadena demonstration hub connecting emergency services, utilities, water resilience and communications while evaluating future fusion-energy applications.
**Phase 3 — 2030s:**
As commercial fusion technology reaches appropriate technical and regulatory readiness, evaluate deployment of modular fusion power systems in Southern California.
**Phase 4 — Regional Expansion:**
Connect clean firm power with advanced water treatment, storage, groundwater recharge and emergency infrastructure throughout Los Angeles County.
The goal is not simply to generate electricity.
The goal is to build **lifesupport infrastructure for an entire region**.
Energy supports water.
Water supports communities.
AI coordinates infrastructure.
Infrastructure supports first responders.
And resilient communities are better prepared to survive the next fire, earthquake, drought, extreme-heat event or major grid emergency.
This is also fundamentally a Mars Society mission.
Mars will require closed-loop systems for energy, water, communications, automation and human survival. Developing those systems here on Earth—under the extreme environmental and infrastructure challenges of Southern California—can become a terrestrial proving ground for the technologies required to sustain future human settlements beyond Earth.
**From San Diego fusion research → to Pasadena resilience → to Los Angeles County water security → to the future of human lifesupport on Earth and Mars.**
The question is no longer whether we should imagine the infrastructure of the future.
The question is whether we are willing to begin designing it now.
