There’s still plenty to learn on Sunday at the Tropical Plant Expo.

Sunday’s lineup takes us from the big picture of aroid research in South America to the fascinating world of geophytic aroids, then back home to our own collections with a fresh look at how understanding a plant’s natural habitat can change the way we grow it. You’ll also have the chance to get hands-on with Bill Rotolante’s moss pole workshop, where you can put some of that growing knowledge into practice.

Join Dr. Tom Croat, Nicholas Rust, Dana Washington (Leafy Diva), and William Rotolante for a day of research, exploration, practical plant knowledge, and hands-on learning.

These photographs show four days in the life of a Leucocasia gigantea inflorescence. Most readers will recognize this plant by its formerly accepted name, Colocasia gigantea.

A molecular phylogenetic study by Nauheimer, Boyce and Renner, published in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution in 2012, clarified the plant’s evolutionary relationships and nomenclatural history:

• Blume originally described the species as Caladium giganteum in 1823.
• Schott transferred it to the newly established genus Leucocasia in 1857.
• Ho**er subsequently transferred it to Colocasia in 1893.
• Comparisons of nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences showed that the species is the sister lineage to Alocasia and does not belong within Colocasia. These findings supported restoring Schott’s name, Leucocasia gigantea.

From diagnosing disorders in your plants to exploring biological pest control and the challenges of crossing Anthurium species, Saturday’s speakers bring together science, experience, and plenty of practical knowledge.

Meet Lynn Griffith, Fraser Cook, Anesia Jackson, and Jos Vanden Abeele and discover what they’ll be sharing throughout the day on Saturday, September 19th.

And when the speaker sessions wrap up on Day 1, the evening isn’t over!! Aroids After Dark begins at 6:30PM bringing the community together for an aroid-focused dinner, guest speakers, the Aroid Awards, and a live auction supporting the work of the International Aroid Society.

Alocasia ‘Roseflare’ was named and originated by Vera Wang-Kukulies of Leafy Arty.

Discovered as a mutation of A. ‘Dragon’s Tooth’, this cultivar is distinguished by its show-stopping pink variegation.
