The Miami Pioneers began in 1936 as Miami’s first historical society with membership limited to families that arrived and settled in South Florida before 1900. Its the oldest and most prestigious historical society in South Florida. Our founding members were the leading pioneer settlers of Miami in it’s formative years, developing the early infrastructure, business community, culture and social fa

bric of South Florida. We honor their commitment and resolve by studying and remembering their legacy while celebrating their significant contributions to our community. The Natives of Dade was founded in the early 1970s by a group of people born in Miami-Dade county. In a community largely known for its transient population, South Florida native born citizens share a common understanding, core memories and and lasting legacy. The group seeks to preserve and share their memories of the community as it has progressed over the decades. These two historical societies merged in 2002 and became the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade. Originally, the minimal aged to be a member was 50 years old, but that restriction was removed in 2007.

On April 16, 2026, Board members Lucien Keen, Robert Burr, Robin Burr, Rebecca Matkov, and Hank Tester accepted the Annual Preservation Award from Dade Heritage Trust for providing 90 years of Miami History to the community through their monthly meeting presentations. Lucien Keen, holding the award, celebrated his 96th birthday.
