Today, we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, and the continued pursuit of equality for all.

As union members, we understand the power of standing together, supporting one another, and working toward a better future. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made and the importance of continuing to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

On behalf of the South Holland Professional Firefighters Association Local 4109, we honor the history, celebrate the achievements of African Americans, and reaffirm our commitment to unity, respect, and solidarity.

Please join us in congratulating FF/PM Kobak on successfully completing his probationary period.

FF/PM Kobak began serving the residents of South Holland on June 6, 2025. Since joining the department, he has demonstrated dedication, commitment, and a strong work ethic while embracing the responsibilities of being a FF/PM.

Throughout his probationary year, FF/PM Kobak has worked hard to develop his skills, learn from senior members, and become a valuable part of our team.

Continue to work hard, stay motivated, and we look forward to many more years of service and success with the South Holland Fire Department.

This week, members of Local 4109 had the opportunity to participate in hands on vehicle extrication training.

Each shift was assigned a vehicle and challenged to utilize the tools carried on their apparatus to practice a variety of extrication techniques that could be used to remove a vehicle from around a trapped patient. Every member had the opportunity to get hands on with the equipment, experiment with different approaches, and learn which techniques are the most efficient while also identifying alternative methods that may require more time and effort if Plan A doesn’t work.

Throughout the training, members practiced cutting, spreading, lifting, rolling, and numerous other vehicle extrication techniques. These hands on drills help build confidence and ensure our FF/PMs are prepared to safely and efficiently rescue patients when seconds matter.

Members also incorporated EMS into the training, discussing the best methods for patient access, treatment priorities, and when activation of crush protocols may be necessary. Junior members were tasked with providing an initial scene size up, performing a rapid triage of potential patients, and understanding what to expect as the incident progressed.

This week, crews were assigned EMS training, but the members of Local 4109 wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather and spend some extra time sharpening their fireground skills.

So in addition to the EMS training, members took the opportunity to get outside and work on multiple skills, focusing on pump operations, hose stretches, advancing charged lines, hydrant hookups, and flowing and moving hose. These hands on drills help build muscle memory, improve communication, and ensure our members are prepared when the call comes in.

A special thank you to the Local 4109 officers for supporting these training opportunities and to the members on each shift for their input, participation, and commitment to improving their craft.

Today we honored the ultimate sacrifice that service members from all military branches throughout the years have made in order to protect our freedom and liberties. Local 4109 members were honored to again participate in the Village of South Holland's Memorial Day parade. Thank you to everyone that came out to participate in the parade whether it was by marching with us, riding a float, or being a spectator, you all made it an incredible experience.

We would also like to take a moment to sincerely thank all our current active service members for placing their lives on the line every day to protect our great country.

FF/PM Nettles began serving the community fulltime on May 22, 2007. Over the last 19 years, he has consistently demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the department, the Local, and the residents he proudly serves.
