CURATOR George Azcárate is an Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. He earned his RN from St. Margaret School of Nursing (2009), a BSN from Chatham University (2010), an MA in Iberian and Latin American Studies from the University of Notre Dame (2019), and a PhD in Spanish from the University of Notre Dame (2025). His research and teaching interests explore the healer/patient relationship and how the patient’s body is transformed into a book that the healer not only reads in search of signs and symptoms, but also writes and edits.

Thank You to the City of South Bend On behalf of the Latin American Chamber of Commerce, we sincerely thank the City of South Bend and the South Bend Common Council for Special Resolution No. 2026-06, which recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month and honors the history, culture, and contributions of the Latino community. We are deeply honored to be recognized in this resolution.

We extend special thanks to Common Council Vice President Sheila Niezgodski, Sixth District Representative, for sponsoring this resolution. We also thank Council Members Sharon McBride, Dr. Heidi Beidinger, Sherry Bolden-Simpson, Karen L. White, and Rachel Tomas Morgan for their support.

This honor belongs to everyone who has walked this journey with us. We thank all who have served on our board, partnered with us, and stood beside us through the years. We cannot do this work without our partners and sponsors. There are too many to name, and we would never want to leave anyone out. From those who opened the first door to those who lent a hand at one of our events, every one of you has been instrumental. We are truly blessed to have so many people standing with our community.

We do what we do to bridge our community, break down barriers, and tear down silos. Together we have walked through doors that once would not open. Now that they are open, we walk in with our heads held high, with dignity, capability, and strength. Silence is not weakness. It takes great strength and character.
