Our mission is to protect, promote and preserve the unique character of the Sourland Mountain region.

The 90-square-mile Sourland Mountain region encompasses a complex ecosystem of forest, wetlands and grasslands. Its mosaic of habitats is home to an incredibly rich diversity of animal and plant species, many rare or endangered.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday for our Robert Garrett Society Cocktail Hour! We unveiled our new strategic plan and shared all of our exciting plans for the years ahead. There were delicious hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and plenty of time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

A special thank-you to Trenton Area Soup Kitchen for the tasty food, Pensive Weeds for the beautiful centerpieces, and Jenny Bryson for the venue, and everyone who attended for helping make this an afternoon to remember.

Today!

Tomorrow, Executive Director Jim Waltman is joining Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Eliza Griswold for A Field Guide to Watersheds: Division and Unity, a seminar with Princeton University.

In this talk, Griswold will use the concept of watershed as a point of departure, and then be joined in conversation by Shoko Yamada, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Sophia University, Japan and Jim Waltman, Executive Director of The Watershed Institute, New Jersey.

🌳 Join the East Amwell Environmental Commission for a volunteer tree planting at the Marion F. Clawson Park pavilion on Wednesday, November 18th, from 10-1.

Volunteers will plant native trees and shrubs in the small rain garden and the unused "ice rink" area. Sourland Conservancy Stewardship Director, Rob Aluck, will offer education on tree planting, maintenance, and overall safety.

Please dress appropriately. We will have some tools and gloves, but please bring your own if you have them.

🌳 Join us for a volunteer tree planting along the South Branch Raritan River!

The Sourland Conservancy, Raritan Headwaters Association, and Somerset County Park Commission are teaming up to improve the riparian buffer in Branchburg. Planting trees along the river helps filter runoff, stabilize the streambank, and create habitat for wildlife. 💧

🌱 Our fall public planting at the Russ Lambert Nature Trail was a success!

Earlier this fall, we teamed up with the Lambertville Parks and Recreation Commission to bring native plants to the trail. Our intrepid volunteers got right to work, planting and protecting 128 native plants, including chestnut oak, black oak, blackhaw, and silky dogwood.

Thank you to everyone who came out. We couldn’t do this work without you! 💚

This work is funded by the Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

We went on an awesome staff hike at Goat Hill last week! 🥾 We spotted red-bellied woodpeckers, learned about white wood aster, and identified several types of trees. Can't wait for the next one! 🌲
