First-choice letters: love them or loathe them?

Some say they annoy admissions directors; others claim they're essential. The truth? They're one of the most debated and mysterious topics in K–12 admissions. Let’s break it down!

Enrolling in a private school is a big decision, and a big investment. While it’s critical that you make a decision based on your own research and feelings, there is also a place for outside perspectives in your decision-making process.

During your school search, conversations with current and past families can help you gain important insights into the school community and an understanding of the school’s educational approach.

1. What made you choose this school initially?
2. How did it compare with other schools you were considering?
3. What concerns or hesitations did you have before committing to this school?
4. Did any of those concerns become challenges once your child enrolled?
5. What do you think is the school’s biggest strength?
6. What is the school’s area of weakness?
7. What words would you use to describe the school’s community?
8. What words would your CHILD use to describe the school in general?
9. Who are your favorite faculty/staff/leadership members, and why?
10. Do you think your family will stay at the school through graduation?

Keep in mind, these opinions should play a small and specific role in the school search process. Why? We call it finding your right-fit school because not every school is right for every student.

Do your own homework and exploration, form your own opinions, and narrow down your list of potential schools to your top contenders before asking for outside opinions.

Short answer: yes, but it depends on the school.

Beyond tuition, private schools may charge fees for things like activities, transportation, testing, or meals. The key is knowing what to ask so you can plan with confidence.

Grades, test scores, and teacher recommendations tell one part of the story.
The essay tells the rest.

Private school admissions essays help schools understand how a student thinks, what they care about, and how they might show up in the community. These tips can help families focus less on “getting it right” and more on telling an honest, thoughtful story.

Wondering how much to help your child with their private school application essay? You can offer support, just don’t do the writing for them.

Proofreading for grammar, spelling, and punctuation? ✔️
Giving feedback like, “Great intro—what if you tied the conclusion to this idea?” ✔️
Asking thoughtful questions to spark reflection? ✔️

But let the essay remain their OWN work. Authentic voice matters most!

When it comes to taking the SSAT, one section is not like the others: the writing sample.

For starters, it’s an essay instead of multiple choice questions, and it's not scored. Unfortunately, students sometimes overlook the writing sample in their because of these differences, and that’s a mistake.

It's not the end of the world!

While these events are a great opportunity to experience the school and start building a rapport with the admissions team, there are still plenty of ways to show your interest and learn about the school.

Let the admissions team know you can't attend, then ask about alternatives like a:
❇️ Virtual open house
❇️ Personal visit and tour
❇️ Chat with current families or faculty members

Check out our Admissions Q&A for more information on admissions open houses.
