Silverton Arts Association steps up to provide avenues for self expression and arts education. They teach art to more than 1000 elementary and middle school students in Silver Falls School District classrooms who may not otherwise receive arts education in the classrooms. Their education portfolio extends to after-school programs at their park-side facilities and with new funding, they plan to triple the after-school options for students.

🦀Students become scientists at a coastal nature preserve

At Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center, high schoolers monitor invasive European crabs one day and use survey tape to map the forest floor the next. What started in 2018 as a nature preserve in Newport, Oregon has grown into a center for education, scientific knowledge, and community along the Oregon Coast.

In September, Arts in Education of the Gorge will be celebrating 40 years of bringing arts classes and developmental training to rural schools in the Columbia River Gorge area.

The organization started by sending teaching artists into classrooms for a week, where they’d teach their art form to the students. Since then, the program has grown, offering year-round arts education, professional development models, public art programs, and more.

With ongoing public school budget cuts, Arts in Education programming is often the only arts instruction children in the Gorge area receive in school.

The small town of Clatskanie in Northwest Oregon demonstrates what is possible when local food and community investment come together. “Every community should have a food hub,” said Jasmine Lillich, executive director of Clatskanie Farmer Collective. “And every community knows what their food hub should look like.” In Clatskanie, what began as an effort to connect local food to customers has become a place to build relationships around food.

đźš’Lebanon Program Introduces Young Women to Careers in Fire Service

Every year, Oregon girls aged 14-19 gather in Lebanon, Oregon to learn what it’s really like to be a female firefighter.

Over a weekend, the Linn County Young Women's Fire Academy introduces girls to experiences ranging from putting out a car fire to doing search and rescue. They throw ladders, learn basic emergency medical skills, and even start an IV on dummies.

As fire departments face staffing shortages, programs like this one are welcoming the next generation of firefighters while making sure young women see themselves represented in a profession where every person who joins—full-time or as a volunteer—makes a critical difference in their community.

🚍The Justice Bus brings legal advice to rural Latino communities

For those who live in Oregon’s rural Latino communities, accessing legal services can be difficult, but Innovation Law Lab wants everyone to have access to legal advice and support regardless of where they live.

In 2025, they began driving a mobile law office they call the Justice Bus so they could bring their services to the community rather than making people come to them.

Throughout Oregon, senior centers provide meals, resources, and a way for older adults to stay connected to their communities. And it takes a lot of work to keep these programs going—often provided free or at low costs.
Grants and public funding, including reimbursements through the Older Americans Act, often cover only a fraction of what it actually costs to provide meals and services.

Oregon is home to thousands of small farms, many of them raising poultry on modest acreage. But competing with industrial producers can make it difficult for those farms to survive. It can also be hard for farmers to explain why their products cost more and why those differences are worth investing in. That’s where the Good Meat Project comes in.

The Good Meat Project is developing a free marketing toolkit to help small farmers sell directly to consumers through farmers’ markets, CSAs, and food hubs. With this resource, they are helping to make pastured poultry a viable business model.
