๐Ÿš HELICOPTER RESCUE SAVES INJURED HIKER NEAR NORTH SISTER

An injured hiker was successfully rescued from rugged terrain near North Sister over Labor Day after unstable volcanic soil made a traditional ground rescue too dangerous.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station North Bend was called in after ground rope-rescue teams were unable to establish secure anchors in the loose terrain.

Despite deteriorating weather conditions, the aircrew performed a precision hoist at approximately 7PM, lifting the injured hiker from the lava field.

The hiker was then flown to Eugene Airport, where they were transferred to emergency medical personnel for further care.

The rescue was a coordinated effort involving the Coast Guard, Oregon Emergency Operations Center, and search-and-rescue crews on the ground with another impressive example of the teamwork required for rescues in the rugged Three Sisters Wilderness. ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ”๏ธ

A Central Oregon business is giving back to the first responders who work to protect its community.

Over The Edge Taphouse has donated $3,414 to Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue, with the money raised through Bingo nights and other community events.

The donation will go toward supporting local firefighters and the work they do throughout Crooked River Ranch and the surrounding area.

Itโ€™s another example of Central Oregon businesses and residents coming together to show their appreciation for the firefighters and first responders who serve their communities. โค๏ธ๐Ÿš’

๐Ÿšง REDMOND INTERSECTION TO CLOSE FOR MORE THAN A WEEK

Drivers in Redmond should prepare for a full closure of the intersection at NW 19th Street and NW Maple Avenue beginning August 27 through September 4.

Crews will reconstruct pavement at the intersection as part of Redmondโ€™s ongoing traffic signal project, which is designed to improve safety in the growing area.

Signed detours will be in place throughout the closure, while access will remain available for nearby residents and businesses.

Drivers traveling through the area are encouraged to use alternate routes, allow additional travel time, and watch for construction crews and changing traffic patterns.

๐ŸŒฒ LONG-TERM FOREST CAMPS RAISE CONCERNS NEAR SISTERS

Long-term camps on public forestland around Sisters are drawing increased attention as residents raise concerns about wildfire risk, trash, environmental damage, and camps located near residential neighborhoods.

Some camps have reportedly remained in the forest for months or even years. A newly assigned U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer has been focusing enforcement efforts on unauthorized residency and activities that damage forest resources.

Federal regulations generally limit camping and prohibit establishing a permanent residence on National Forest land without authorization. Violations can result in citations, fines, orders to leave, and in some circumstances misdemeanor charges.

The issue has become increasingly complicated as local organizations work with people experiencing homelessness while law enforcement and land managers attempt to protect public lands and surrounding communities.

With wildfire season underway, camps located close to neighborhoods have brought renewed attention to how long-term forest occupancy is handled throughout Sisters Country.

๐Ÿฅพ MAJOR EXPANSION COMING TO SISTERS-AREA TRAILS

The Sisters Trails Alliance has secured a $158,000 grant to help fund one of the biggest expansions of the Sisters-area trail system in years.

The Sisters Trail Additions & Realignments or STAR project includes nearly 17 miles of new trails, 30 miles of existing routes being formally incorporated into the system, and about 12 miles of trail realignments.

The grant will help fund work on approximately 53 miles of trails, along with new signs, maps, and trailhead kiosks.

The project will benefit a variety of trail users, with improvements planned for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and other recreation. Some routes will also be moved away from forest roads or sensitive habitat, improving safety while helping protect the surrounding landscape.

The STAR project is the first major trail expansion in the Sisters Ranger District in more than 15 years, with work expected to be completed by August 2028.

๐Ÿš’ RESIDENT VOLUNTEERS HELP POWER SISTERSโ€™ FIRE & EMERGENCY RESPONSE

An important part of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District operates largely behind the scenes: its Resident Volunteer program, which trains future firefighters and paramedics while adding additional emergency responders to the local community.

Resident Volunteers live at the Sisters fire station and train alongside career firefighter/paramedics. Their work includes responding on ambulances and fire apparatus, fighting structure and wildland fires, rescue operations, and emergency medical response.

Those selected go through firefighter academy and EMT training before working a full-time firefighter schedule. At the same time, volunteers attend courses through Central Oregon Community College, studying fire science or working toward becoming paramedics.

The program gives aspiring firefighters valuable hands-on experience while providing the growing Sisters community with additional emergency-response resources. Some graduates have even returned to Sisters to become career firefighter/paramedics.

As Sisters Country continues to grow, these Resident Volunteers remain an important part of keeping the community protected. โค๏ธ๐Ÿš’

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ SISTERS LOOKS TO EXPAND FOR FUTURE GROWTH

The City of Sisters is moving forward with a major proposal to expand its Urban Growth Boundary by approximately 318.6 acres, potentially opening new areas for housing, businesses, parks, open space, infrastructure, and other future development.

The proposed expansion is primarily east of the existing urban growth boundary, north of Highway 126 and south of Sisters Eagle Airport. The effort is intended to provide enough land to accommodate Sistersโ€™ expected growth over roughly the next 20 years.

The proposal has been in development for several years, with community meetings and a citizen steering committee helping shape where Sisters should grow. The Sisters Planning Commission voted in May to recommend approval of the proposed expansion.

The process is not finished yet. Deschutes Countyโ€™s Planning Commission is scheduled to continue its public hearing on the proposal on August 27, with the written record remaining open until then. Additional approval steps involving the City, County, and ultimately the State of Oregon remain before the boundary expansion can become final.

If ultimately approved, the expansion could significantly shape what Sisters looks like in the coming decades as the community balances new housing and economic development with the character and surrounding landscape that define Sisters.

๐Ÿ”ฅ RECOVERY BEGINS ACROSS AKAWA BUTTE FIRE BURN SCAR

Weeks after the Akawa Butte Fire tore through thousands of acres northeast of Sisters, attention is shifting from fighting the wildfire to recovering the landscape left behind.

The lightning-caused fire started July 16 and ultimately burned approximately 27,491 acres before reaching 99% containment in early August.

Now, work is focused on the aftermath of the fire, including assessing the massive burn scar, repairing areas impacted by suppression efforts, and addressing concerns about erosion and the long-term recovery of the landscape.

The fire dramatically changed portions of the countryside northeast of Sisters, and while the immediate wildfire threat has largely passed, recovery from a fire of this size will continue well beyond the end of fire season.

For Sisters Country, itโ€™s the beginning of the next chapter after one of the areaโ€™s most significant wildfires of the summer.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ THREE SISTERS CITY COUNCIL SEATS UP FOR ELECTION

Sisters residents interested in serving their community have an opportunity to run for Sisters City Council, with three council positions set to appear on the ballot in the November 3, 2026 General Election.

Candidate filing is currently open, but prospective candidates have limited time remaining. The filing deadline for new candidates is August 25 at 5:00 p.m.

Those interested in running can pick up a candidate packet at Sisters City Hall. Because the filing process and requirements can take time to complete, prospective candidates are encouraged to begin the process early.

The election will determine who fills three positions on the council and will give Sisters voters a chance to help shape the cityโ€™s leadership and future.

๐Ÿ”ฅ GRASSHOPPER FIRE NEAR MOUNT HOOD APPROACHES 87,000 ACRES

While Central Oregon continues keeping a close eye on the Rowe Creek Complex and Hidden Forest Fire, firefighters elsewhere in Oregon are facing intense conditions on the Grasshopper Fire near Mount Hood.

Images from the north side of the fire show the extreme conditions crews are encountering as they work to slow its spread.

As of the latest update, the Grasshopper Fire had burned nearly 87,000 acres and was approximately 37% contained.

Evacuation warnings have also been issued across portions of three counties as firefighters continue working to protect communities and strengthen containment lines.

Itโ€™s another reminder of just how widespread wildfire activity has become across Oregon this summer.
