This sizzling fundraiser promises a night full of flavor, fun, and community spirit — all in support of The Banquet’s mission to provide food and fellowship to those in need.

🎒 AND JUST LIKE THAT… WHAT A PROJECT: SOS SEASON! 💙

Last Saturday marked Day 6 of our scheduled backpack distribution, but the work didn't stop when the doors closed.

This week, volunteers have continued sorting, restocking, organizing and packing backpacks, putting the finishing touches on a Project: SOS season that took thousands of school supplies and an incredible number of helping hands to make happen.

And then came the two days ALL of this was leading up to…

🍎 THE FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL! ✏️📚

As students across the Sioux Falls School District headed back to their classrooms Thursday and Friday, Project: SOS was still right here, distributing backpacks and supplies.

Some families weren't able to make their original distribution date. Others learned about Project: SOS a little later. And through our partnership with the Sioux Falls School District, additional students in need were identified and connected with the supplies to help them start the year.

Because THAT is why we do this. ❤️

From the first donated notebook to the backpacks still going out our doors… from businesses that hosted supply drives to families who went shopping… from volunteers young and old who sorted, counted, packed, hauled, restocked and distributed…

YOU were part of Project: SOS.

Days of distribution.

Thousands of backpacks.

Countless school supplies.

One incredible community.

And behind every number is a student who gets to walk into school a little more prepared and a little more confident.

But here's something important about Project: SOS:

The first day of school isn't the finish line.

Needs don't always follow a registration deadline or fit neatly on a distribution calendar. Circumstances change. Families move. Students arrive. Needs come up.

And when they do, Project: SOS continues doing what it was created to do: Supply Our Students. 💙

Every person who signs up takes one more worry off the schedule and puts another helping hand beside our staff, our guests, and the volunteers already committed to serving.

Today, we remember Joan Vaughn Gross, The Banquet's first director and one of the people whose vision helped shape what this ministry would become.

When Joan and others began asking how Sioux Falls could respond to hunger more than 40 years ago, she believed providing food was only part of the answer. How a person was welcomed mattered. How they were treated mattered. Their dignity mattered.

Joan put it simply:

"The poor should never be served poorly."

That belief helped shape The Banquet from its earliest days. This wasn't meant to be a place where one group simply gave to another. It was meant to be a table where people gathered, shared a meal, talked, listened and recognized something they had in common with the person across from them.

In The Welcome Table: Reflections on The Banquet, Joan wrote about the difference between sharing with someone and simply giving to someone. She believed sitting together could break down the invisible line between host and guest, helper and helped. Her words and her work continually returned to the same idea: a meal can feed much more than hunger.

Two years after Joan's passing, her influence is still felt at The Banquet.

It is there when someone is welcomed through our doors without being asked to explain why they came.
It is there when a meal is prepared with care rather than simply handed out.
It is there when volunteers discover that serving another person often changes them, too.
And it is there in the simple belief that everyone deserves a place at the table.

Today, we honor Joan not only for what she helped begin, but for what she taught us a table could be:

A place of nourishment.
A place of dignity.
A place of community.
A place where everyone belongs.

Thank you, Joan, for helping set the table.

✨ A Little More Shine at The Banquet.

Sometimes community support looks like a donation. Sometimes it looks like serving a meal. And sometimes, it comes with a bucket, a squeegee and a willingness to lend your talents.

Today we welcomed Charlie from Sioux Empire Shine to The Banquet, where he put his skills to work helping our building shine a little brighter. Even better, Charlie brought his son (Jacob) along, giving him a chance to learn some tricks of the trade while seeing firsthand what it means to use what you know to give back to your community.

Sioux Empire Shine is a local, family-run and veteran-owned business built around quality work, attention to detail and caring about the community they call home. We’re grateful Charlie chose to share some of that care with The Banquet.

Because supporting your community doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it simply means asking, What can I do? and then showing up to do it.

Thank you, Charlie and Sioux Empire Shine, for helping us see things a little more clearly! 🪟✨

While we are 1 week (Next Monday, the 31st) away from a movie premiere that will benefit The Banquet, we sadly (but also extremely happy) report that our official night is sold out prior to us even getting to share it to all of you- THANK YOU!!!!

That being said, we see that they have announced two more screenings at the Sioux Falls State Theatre and those are almost sold out also! If you want to experience this local film in an impeccable venue while supporting local nonprofits, now is your chance!
