Cancer Comfort Collection

Cancer Comfort Collection CCC brings new comfort items to patients admitted into the hospital for cancer to help fight the mental battle as they fight the physical battle.

Amber started Cancer Comfort Collection after an Avera Hospital volunteer's simple gesture helped her mom's mental battle while fighting the physical battle as an inpatient with cancer. And that's what the Cancer Comfort Collection is about! Donations needed by Nov. 19, 2021: new men's hat/stocking hats, new soft blankets, new soft socks, adult coloring/puzzle books, colored pencils.

Got a big comfort hug in the mail for Peggy's closet from one of my mom's classmates from Southwest Iowa. Men's and women's two piece button front pajamas, super soft blankets, easy and challenging coloring books and multi-tip colored markers. All of these were very much needed and found the perfect spot in Peggy's closet for them.

Thank you to my mom's classmate for helping to keep Peggy's closet going and bringing comfort to patients at a time when they absolutely need it most.

Thank you to the local donor that asks at least once a month while running errands "what does Peggy's Closet need"?

It’s these quiet, ongoing acts of generosity that sustain Peggy’s Closet and helps bring comfort at a time when those need it most.

This last week I delivered a couple silk flowers in vases for some folks that might need a cheerful Easter Hug to help brighten up their day at Inpatient Oncology.

Also had a very large personal delivery from Carroll, Iowa to Peggy's Closet(found at inpatient oncology) of seasonal soft blankets and soft thick grippy socks in honor of Peggy Reed. ♥️

Hoping these items help bring comfort and smiles to patients and their families during a time when they need it most.

Thank you to the donor that is keeping Peggy's Closet stocked with men's button front two piece pajama sets and pajama bottoms. I know the patients appreciate having the option (when applicable) to wear as an alternative to hospital gowns.

We've had a cold snap in the Midwest for the past couple weeks and I wanted to share with you something that might provide some warmth. The Cancer Comfort Collection is able to help more people Because of You. The CCC isn't a nonprofit or has a corporate sponsor, or a designated staff making this all happen, it really is that simple, you are the reason why people are getting help at a time when they need it most. Without you, this doesn't happen.

For the 4th year, you made it possible to extend the CCC reach where patients are receiving cancer treatment locally; Aberdeen, Mitchell, Yankton and Pierre, SD.

This year a total of 325 cancer patients in those regions will be provided a CCC item to help bring them comfort at a time they need it most.

Thank you to many members of the Avera Foundation team and Aberdeen nurse Mari Mammenga and CCC volunteer Jon Mammenga for helping get the comfort items to where they needed to be.

Thank YOU for helping to make this happen whether you are donating, wanting to volunteer, sharing a CCC post, sending along well wishes or sending positive vibes to cancer patients. None of this happens without you!

Because of You, the road is not stopping there. We are not done yet! Stay Tuned!

This past week, a monetary donation came in from SouthWest Iowa in honor of my mom for Peggy's Closet located at Inpatient Oncology at the Prairie Center.

Their donation enabled me to procure 3 soft button front women's pajama sets and 5 soft thick blankets.

After I stocked the shelves with these items, an oncology patient alongside her IV pole and her nurse walked into Peggy's Closet and picked out a women's pajamas set. She was going to be inpatient for awhile and was looking forward to not having to wear her hospital gown full time and wearing something that made her feel more comfortable and more like herself.

We all need some help from time to time and it's the simplest things that can make all the difference especially at a time when we need it most.

Thank you to the SouthWest Iowa folks that donated in my mom's honor and for helping keep Peggy's Closet going!
