Together we can create it. In a time when far too many doors are closed to refugees and forcibly displaced people, HIAS stands as a steadfast beacon of hope. Founded more than 120 years ago, we champion the values of welcome, justice, empathy, partnership, courage, and resilience. We are a Jewish humanitarian organization that works in the United States and across the globe, providing vital servic

es to refugees and asylum seekers of all backgrounds so they can rebuild their lives. With the strength of Jewish communities beside us, we not only deliver legal support, economic empowerment, and social services, we also advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced people around the world. Every action we take reaffirms our commitment to keep the pathways to hope and refuge open for those in need. Join us in building a future of safety, dignity, and opportunity for all. The images from Delaney Hall in NJ are shocking. If this is how ICE chooses to treat people publicly, it gives insight into how bad the conditions must be inside.

It's up to all of us to oppose this brutality that detainees have been describing. Learn how you can take action on detention issues:

The Trump administration just officially increased the refugee admissions ceiling mid-year in order to admit an additional 10,000 white South Africans.

At the same time, tens of thousands of refugees fleeing war, persecution, and violence remain stranded and blocked from protection – and have remained that way since January 20, 2025.

For nearly half a century, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program embodied a simple but powerful, bipartisan idea: that the U.S. would offer safety to the world’s most vulnerable refugees.

"The future of refugee protection belongs to every person who has ever been brave enough to step onto a boat, a plane, a car, or to walk a long road far from who and what they love and know," shared HIAS President & CEO Beth Oppenheim.

As the Jewish holidays of Shabbat and Shavuot conclude, HIAS strongly condemns the announcement of a new memo from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) which could force hundreds of thousands of people who are pursuing lawful permanent residence to leave the U.S. and wait abroad for years while their cases are processed.

”The administration’s new policy could force thousands of people to be separated from their families, their jobs, and their homes in order to wait for years outside of the country for their green card,” said Beth Oppenheim, HIAS President & CEO.

As we continue to witness the devastating impacts of anti-immigrant attacks in the U.S., it can feel overwhelming to find effective ways to take action.

But every action counts, no matter how small 🫂

Refugees have strengthened the U.S. for generations. But now, the Trump administration is reportedly increasing the refugee admissions ceiling mid-year in order to admit an additional 10,000 white South Africans.

"This is not refugee protection. It is the politicization of a humanitarian program in service of an ideological agenda," shared HIAS President & CEO Beth Oppenheim.

Our thoughts and support are with the Islamic Center of San Diego and all those affected by today's tragic attack.

San Diego is a city of people of all faiths, all who deserve to live in a world where their safety is assured and their humanity is cherished. As a Jewish and humanitarian organization that has worked side by side with the people of San Diego to welcome and support refugees and immigrants, we are particularly saddened by this horrific act. Hate has NO place in our world.

Once limited to internet fringes, the Great Replacement Theory entered the mainstream when it inspired mass shootings and the 2017 “Unite the Right” protest in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Today, this dangerously false ideology has been front and center on some of the biggest political stages in the country.

Given our role at the intersection of Jewish identity and assistance for refugees, it's not surprising that HIAS has found itself targeted by proponents of the Great Replacement Theory. But for over a century, our mission has remained the same, drawing on our values of welcome and empathy.

One thing is for certain: We will not be deterred by hatred in any form.
