HIAS denounces an outrageous new policy by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that will make it easier for the Trump administration to terminate the legal status of people who were resettled through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

“Stripping away the security promised to refugees, and with little to no procedural safeguards, shatters our promise to them and sends a devastating message to both refugees and their persecutors alike: that even the most lawful and carefully vetted path to protection in the United States can be arbitrarily revoked,” shared Naomi Steinberg, HIAS VP of Refugee, Immigration Policy and Advocacy.

The earthquake in Colombia was not isolated.

It came alongside wildfires, volcanic alerts, flooding, El Niño-linked drought, and conflict-related displacement, putting real strain on the government and aid groups trying to respond.

A powerful reflection from HIAS' Rabbi-in-Residence:

"For all the disorienting toxicity in the world, I have found myself steadied by what HIAS continually projects back out into that brokenness.

It was not the purpose of HIAS in Israel to rebuild my moral faith when it helped displaced asylum seeker communities get the critical support they needed as society was in complete disarray. But it did. Our organizational advocacy for unobstructed humanitarian aid and the protection of aid workers and civilians in Gaza was not done for the purpose of strengthening my moral resolve. But it did.

As we face this tragic anniversary that has unleashed untold suffering – it is my fervent prayer that those of us who hold dear to that small kernel of human kindness double down on our commitment."

Each year, the President announces how many people will be granted safety through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

This year, that announcement was appalling: 17,500 people will be welcomed — 'primarily' white South Africans. The decision distorts the legacy of a program that has always been used to protect the world's most vulnerable populations.

Who has been left out?

Refugees fleeing wars in Sudan, Syria, and Ukraine, victims of religious persecution in Iran and Myanmar, Afghans who supported the U.S. mission and were left stranded outside of the country. And more.

"We will never stop speaking out for a return to a program that welcomes refugees from around the world who have been persecuted because of who they are and what they believe" said Naomi Steinberg, HIAS Vice President of Refugee and Immigration Policy & Advocacy.
