We are excited to share that Springsong Museum's Founder and Executive Director Rebecca Henson has been awarded a 2026-2027 Research Fellowship at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. For us, the Beinecke is the single most important trove of primary source material: Rachel Carson's papers, including thousands of handwritten letters, field notes, manuscripts, and other treasures. Rebecca's research here will directly inform the substance of the story the Springsong will tell and how we tell it through our exhibits and programs.
As a public museum situated in the densely populated and accessible Silver Spring, Maryland, Springsong will share Rachel Carson's important and inspiring life, work, and legacy with new and diverse audiences. This opportunity to educate and inspire visitors of all ages brings with it significant responsibility, with a high bar set by Rachel Carson herself. Carson was committed to the highest level of trust and scholarship in her own research and communication with the public. While she was recognized and beloved for her ability to share facts through beautiful writing, for her, the integrity of those facts was paramount.
Rachel Carson's life and teachings are more extraordinary and relevant than most of us know. As an independent museum, Springsong's commitment to finding, collecting, and sharing this history is fundamental to our mission, even more so in these times of growing reliance on often inaccurate AI-generated "facts." Our research spans local oral history to in-depth, onsite archival material reviews at libraries across the country.
History has the power to connect us to important ideas, to place, and to one another; its value cannot be overstated. We are thrilled to deepen our historical footings through Rebecca's Yale Beinecke fellowship and cannot wait for our exhibits and programs to connect our visitors to Rachel Carson through this incredible resource.
