Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community A transformative community in the Himalayas, rooted in love and compassion, cultivating education, sustainability, and growth for all ages.

Lobsang Phuntsok, a Buddhist monk from the Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh, India, long dreamed of helping to serve the needs of the remote Himalayan region where he was born. Lobsang envisioned an educational Community where at-risk children from these impoverished villages could thrive and learn in an environment founded on the principles of love, compassion, and wisdom which were at the co

re of his own Buddhist upbringing. His inspiration was to share the blessings of education and the opportunities he had received during his experience growing up at Sera Je Monastery in southern India and his travels around the world. Lobsang’s dream was realized when Jhamtse Gatsal opened its doors in 2006, welcoming 34 of the most at-risk children from local villages, three teachers, two housemothers, and three support staff. This was made possible by the support of Jhamtse International. Today, Jhamtse Gatsal is a vibrant thriving Community sustained by a dedicated staff. We have a dream for the Community and its facilities to continue to grow, adding a new class of students each year, until we have about 200 students from grades K-12.

We are deeply grateful to the Indian Army and the medical team of District Hospital, Tawang, for bringing essential healthcare to our children and community members.

For a remote community like ours, access to medical care can be challenging. Today, the Army’s spirit of service extended beyond its usual duties, bringing compassionate care where it was deeply needed.

Our children and staff received essential general medicine, dental and ENT care, with dignity and kindness.

We are deeply thankful to all those who made this possible.

Our journey in Bhutan continued at ELC, our beloved sister school, where Genla Lobsang and Raju were wELComed with such warmth and generosity.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Ma’am Deki Choden La and the entire ELC family for opening their hearts and their home to us—for the precious time shared, the meaningful conversations, and for creating such a beautiful gathering of kindred souls.

The screening of _Loving Karma_ brought together educators, teachers, parents, scholars, the former Education Minister of Bhutan, and the Head of the United Nations in Bhutan. We are deeply grateful to the ELC School for receiving the spirit of Jhamtse with such warmth and care, and for reminding us that when love is shared, it knows no distance.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Her Majesty the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Gyalyum Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Royal Patron of Bhutan Echoes: Drukyul’s Literature and Arts Festival, for the gracious invitation to Genla Lobsang Phuntsok to be part of this year’s gathering on the theme—The Art of Being Human.

Genla had the honour of engaging in a deeply meaningful discussion on “Love as a Radical Act,” moderated by Tshering Yuden la, reflecting on the simple yet transformative power of love, compassion, and human connection. The session brought together distinguished guests from around the world for an afternoon of laughter, reflection, and heartfelt emotion.

The Festival also launched the Bhutan premiere of Loving Karma. We are deeply grateful to the entire Bhutan Echoes team for their warmth and gracious care throughout the Festival.

It is never easy to say goodbye to someone who gave so much of himself so generously to others.

Last evening, Father Barry, a cherished friend of Jhamtse Gatsal and an unwavering believer in our vision, departed for his heavenly abode. His passing leaves a deep emptiness in our hearts, yet we feel profoundly grateful to have walked alongside such a compassionate and reverent soul. He will forever remain a part of the Jhamtse family.

Thank you, Father Barry, for believing in us and for walking beside our children and community for more than a decade. Your kindness, quiet generosity, and steadfast faith touched countless lives. Though you are no longer with us in body, your spirit will continue to live on in our hearts and in the love you helped nurture at Jhamtse Gatsal.

May your soul rest in eternal peace. You will always be remembered with deep gratitude, held with love, and dearly missed by all of us.
