SIXR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides underrepresented communities with early access to emerging technologies to empower individuals and communities through tech education and training. Their cultur
ally responsive techniques connect with BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ communities, providing early access to technological resources for people of varying cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. SIXR is recognized for their strong desire to articulate and use STEAM activities, such as coding, gaming, programming languages, and audio/visual design technology, to pique the interest of youths. Their programs include the 48-Hour Cinematic VR Challenges, emerging tech showcases, mentorship programs, and paid internships for the Future Founders Maker Fellowship and Future Founders VR Fellowship. They have partnered with organizations such as School’s Out Washington, King County’s 4Culture, Seattle’s Dept of Human Services, Africatown, Refugee Women’s Alliance, and Rainier Beach Action Coalition to build immersive media education, apprenticeship, and entrepreneurship training. SIXR is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive tech industry for the future by bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities for individuals who may have been at risk of displacement. They produce robust holistic approaches, including cascade mentoring, paid internships, self-care, and career-launch workshops, as well as other wrap-around resources and support. Their goal is to narrow the participation gap, potentially securing the community’s future and pulling them out of generational poverty.
