Tillamook Swiss Society will be hosting their Swingfest on May 16. It looks to be a wonderful place to spend a Saturday in May.

Schwingen is both ancient and wonderfully alive. Schwingfests have that rare quality where the tradition itself becomes the spectacle — no flashy reinventions, no modern theatrics, just strength, skill, and a culture that’s been carried forward for more than a millennium.

The Tillamook Crowned Schwingfest, being the only indoor one in the U.S., gives it this almost secret, special-club energy.
The schwingerhosen, the belts, the wood-chip ring, the Steinstossen (rock throwing, another traditional competition) between wrestling bouts., the live Ländler music – is earthy and grounded, but also ceremonial in its own way.

There’s something refreshing about a sport that hasn’t felt the need to reinvent itself every decade.

The Monroe Swiss Club and the Seattle Swiss Society are excited to invite you to their annual Christmas get-together! The clubs are providing the meat and beverages, and we are counting on YOU to bring your favorite potluck dish (a salad, side dish or a dessert) – ideally something Swiss.

After lunch (around 1:30 PM), we’ll roll up our sleeves for some hands-on fun: Grittibänz baking! Baking these adorable little Swiss dough men for St. Nicholas Day is a Swiss tradition and favorite for young and old. Bring an apron and a pair of clean scissors, and you can shape your own Grittibänz! (Yes, adults are definitely encouraged to join in!)

MJW (thank you, Mike!) has generously agreed to once again donate a beautiful, real Christmas tree for our big event. The kids will have a blast making ornaments and singing Christmas carols — and of course, Santa himself will make a special stop! He’ll be handing out treat bags to all the children.
