An inspiring weekend of learning and connecting at the Ground Zero Center this August 8th and 9th!
The weekend featured a series of workshops, music by David Rovics and keynotes by Abby Martin, Vincent Intondi and Bo Jacobs. On August 9th, 81 years from the atomic bombing Nagasaki, there was a youth-led protest at the gates of Naval Base Bangor, the largest concentration of deployed nuclear weapons in the world.
We are still here.
We still remember.
We are still working towards a world without nuclear weapons, connecting our movements, and bringing new leaders into the movement.

"As we age, certain memories grow sharper rather than dimmer. One memory has stayed vivid with me for more than four decades: standing among a million people in New York City on June 12, 1982, calling for a halt to the nuclear arms race.

My husband, Jim, and I traveled to Manhattan to participate in what became the largest political demonstration in American history. The rally coincided with the United Nations Second Special Session on Disarmament and focused on support for the Nuclear Freeze movement, which sought to stop the testing, production, and deployment of nuclear weapons.

I have recalled that day many times over the years while teaching classes on peace and disarmament, more recently those organized by Olympia Peacemaker, Glen Anderson.. Each time, I could still feel the same rush of excitement and hope.

It is one thing to join a crowd and enjoy the companionship of like-minded people. It is something entirely different to emerge from Grand Central Station and walk toward the United Nations on First Avenue, only to discover that every avenue of the five en route was filled with people as far as the eye could see. Looking north and south, there were human beings everywhere."

Tacoma has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 2005, joining cities around the world in calling for the prevention of nuclear war and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. At tonight’s City Council meeting, Mayor Anders Ibsen and members of City Council reaffirmed Tacoma’s commitment to advancing peace and called upon national leaders to pursue diplomacy, strengthen arms control agreements, reduce the role of nuclear weapons in national security policy, and move toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Nuclear Triad is "modernizing". New nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed Columbia-Class submarines are planned for the Pacific Northwest. This will be the largest submarine that the Navy has ever built at a cost of over $126 billion heading to Puget Sound.
