Winston studies when and where genes turn on and off during human development, which could lead to new gene therapies for developmental disorders. But when he was awarded a fellowship funding him to do the work, he lost some benefits because at UW, Postdocs with and without fellowships have different benefits. As a postdoc climate scientist, Haruki uses climate models to study the potential impact of cooling the climate by brightening clouds. Like many other international postdocs, he is worried about escalating attacks on non-citizens in this country and how it affects his ability to do research. That’s why it is crucial to maintain and strengthen the job security and international scholar protections in our union contract.
