Inspiring the next generation of scientists! 🔬✨
We had a great time at the Career Fair at Franklin High School connecting with curious and motivated students. Our team from NWABR set up a table to share exciting opportunities in biomedical science and talk about our hands-on summer program, Camp BIOmed.
Students learned how they can explore real-world topics like forensic science, cancer biology, and genetic engineering while experiencing what a future in STEM could look like.

I think that people should keep adopting animals, not just rats, but all the animals from WACRRA, because that means that we can keep having more ethical animal research done. And we can support that process of taking care of animals in animal research.~Evie Mochi and Pocket, rats adopted by Evie from Washington Adoption Center for Retired Research Animals* JEN: Hello, Evie....

Did you know that elephants rarely get cancer? 🐘🐘
Check out our new open access article in the March/April 2025 issue of The Science Teacher (NSTA)! It describes a new curriculum unit, Elephants & Cancer, that was designed for high school life sciences teachers and their students. Students develop an explanation for the incidence of cancer in elephants and four other animals: manatees, naked mole rats, dogs, and Galápagos Giant Tortoises. Learning activities include a hands-on gel electrophoresis lab, a bioinformatics activity, a p53 protein modeling activity, and an exploration of cladograms and genomic evolution in animals. Students discover why elephants’ genetic makeup makes them less susceptible to cancer and how an understanding of the TP53 gene and p53 protein is applicable to understanding cancer in humans. The full curriculum unit is freely available from the Fred Hutch Cancer Center's SEP Curriculum webpage (linked below).
