A few weeks ago, our Crooked Trails crew found themselves trekking across the golden dunes of Morocco’s Erg Chebbi for three unforgettable days in the Western Sahara.

Before we set off, our guides and camel shepherds gave us an essential desert survival lesson: how to wrap a tagelmust—a long, breathable cotton scarf (about 8–10 feet!) that shields your head and face from sun, sand, and wind.

Soon everyone in our group was expertly wrapped like seasoned desert traveler. The tagelmust—also known as a cheich, shesh, or litham depending on the region—turned out to be both stylish and practical. In fact, many of us liked them so much that we kept wearing them for the rest of our Morocco trip.

Proof that sometimes the best travel souvenirs are the skills (and scarves) you bring home with you. 🐪🌞
