Disability Empowerment Center We believe everyone deserves to be treated with equality, to be included and to have choices. We were formerly the Alliance of People with disAbilities.

Disability Empowerment Center provides people in King County with skills training, access to resources and peer support. We are a nonprofit dedicated to helping people of all abilities find services to live as independently as you choose. We offer you choices in an empowering setting whether you are looking to learn new skills, join a peer support group, get help transitioning into living on your own or find other community-based services. Our staff and volunteers know that inequities persist for disabled people because we have disabilities, too. Our new name reflects the critical direct services we provide our community in an empowering setting that emphasizes choice and autonomy for people with disabilities.

Fun share!

Earlier this year our staff team had the opportunity to meet with disability champions from across the Pacific Northwest at a regional conference for the Centers for Independent Living (we're one of them!)

It was amazing to meet in person to connect and talk about important topics affecting our work like federal threats to independent living, self-care, leadership and community engagement.

This picture shows all the folks who represent Centers for Independent Living across Washington state.

We recently welcomed state Rep. Steve Bergquist to take a tour of our Seattle office and chat about the importance of Centers for Independent Living.

We talked about the role of Centers for Independent Living and the struggles the disability community is facing, including cuts to Medicaid eligibility, new work requirements and federal budget impacts.

More people are turning to Disability Empowerment Center as an organization that serves the whole person, because access to other resources are becoming more limited.

We love being able to have these important conversations. Want to see our work in action? Let us know!

"I think the biggest help was being treated like a person. Looking at me, people normally just don't think anything's wrong with me.

But coming in, I immediately felt like I was being heard, and my concerns were taken seriously."
