Our team squeezed 11,180 native trees into two buzzing, rain-soaked days of deliveries earlier this year. Today, those trees have taken root at 27 parks across Washington, from Bellingham to Tacoma.

We’re so proud to celebrate a big milestone in Gold Creek Valley: after 14 years of planning, permitting, and partnership-building, the Gold Creek Valley Restoration Project is officially under construction. Crews broke ground this spring, reshaping Gold Creek Pond and staging boulders, logs, and root wads to rebuild the log jams this creek needs to thrive.

Forterra has been part of this story since 2009, 250 acres were purchased with support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It’s been a joy to watch this vision take shape. Thank you to our partners: Kittitas Conservation Trust, USDA Forest Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Conservation Northwest.

An extra special thanks to everyone who joined us for June's Forterra Friday at Patterson Creek Preserve.

Volunteers from the public and BECU spent the day grubbing invasive blackberries. It was a fun challenge to distinguish them from the native salmonberries and blackberries on site. We also swapped stories, talked about the importance of Patterson Creek Preserve, and learned a lot about non-native plants.

Patterson Creek Preserve was once slated for development, but today it protects 120 acres of forests, wetlands, and streams that filter water into the Snoqualmie River watershed. Spending a warm, sunny Friday evening caring for this landscape was a nice reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together.

What a perfect day! Sunshine on the prairie with violet- green swallows and bluebirds flying around claiming ownership of the many nesting boxes scattered about the landscape. And the timing could not be more perfect for camas in full bloom. All of us were excited to hit the trails that led through swaths of violet/blue camas mixed with deep yellow western buttercups. Humming birds laid claim to the orange honeysuckle, participants tasted the nutritious miners lettuce and the thrushes (newly arrived from South America) will soon be feasting on service berries now in full white bloom.

Forterra’s vision is in full bloom too here at Morse Wildlife Preserve. A precious landscape that contributes to the last 3% of the once vibrant and common prairie ecosystem in Western Washington. As we pondered an enormous 250-300 year-old Garry oak, our guide Gary Mozel inspired us to think about all the history this tree has witnessed and the habitat that it has provided. And now we steward this vulnerable verdant gem forward for future generations.

What a perfect day!

To celebrate Earth Day, we rolled up our sleeves.

At our Forterra Friday event in April, volunteers cleared 6,500 square feet of English ivy from Crestview Park in Tukwila - a record-breaking first-time removal according to the City of Tukwila.

That’s what community-powered restoration looks like.
