What does a Western Hemlock smell like? Turns out, a little like grapefruit. 🌿

Participants from Tacoma Community House explored native plants through stories and sensory experiences at Point Defiance Park.

That hands-on learning is part of Forterra’s Evergreen Restoration Program. It helps people connect with the natural areas we work to restore.

History and nature joined as one for a very special Forterra Nature Discovery event held Saturday, October 3, in Roslyn.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Yakama Nation leaders who shared Tribal knowledge and culture through the trailside talk as well as the dance and ceremony presentations.

Our Forterra Nature Discovery series builds awareness of the special landscapes we care for while cultivating a sense of well-being for our supporters through nature experiences.

Midnight Snack 🍎🦌

Shoutout to the Morse Wildlife Preserve caretaker who caught this sweet moment. This elk knows how to pluck apples right off the branch like a pro!

Did you know elk are most active at dawn and dusk? They’ll feed well into the night when a tree is loaded with fruit. This makes apple season and longer autumn evenings prime time for this kind of visitor.

There’s always something to discover at the preserve, no matter who’s passing through.

Conservation conversations at a Jack Johnson show? We’re in!

Last weekend, we joined fellow Washington nonprofits in the All At Once Village Green at Gorge Amphitheatre, sharing our work with concertgoers during the SURFILMUSIC tour stop.

We also welcomed ticket-drawing winners Kaylyn and Aaron to the Forterra table and got a special visit from Jack Johnson himself and his wife, Kim, before the show.

Thanks to All At Once for such a memorable night and for creating space for local environmental work along the tour.

With Hispanic Heritage Month underway, we’re reminded of moments that brought people and nature together during recent Latino Conservation Week activities in our area.

🌱 Nearly 80 participants joined us for a plant identification walk through Northwest Native Plant Garden, a hidden gem at Point Defiance Park.

The event came together through our partnership with Tacoma Community House and was made possible thanks to the funding from Hispanic Access Foundation’s Nuestros Bosques project.

🌅 At Discovery Park, Nosotros En Naturaleza brought a dozen folks together for a sunset hike, ending the evening with snacks and views of the Olympic Mountains.

There are all kinds of ways to find yourself at one of our Forterra Fridays.

Our latest event brought together Boy Scouts, gardeners, college students, first-time volunteers, and one person who saw a Threads post saying, "volunteer with your local land trust" and just...did. 🙌

Together with Snohomish County Healthy Forest Project, we:
🌿 Removed blackberry until we could finally see the creek bed.
🌿 Built another compost raft.
🌿 Learned about laminated root rot, and how that affects plant choices.
🌿 Covered bare soil with compost, to prevent erosion until the December planting.

And then came the best part: 24 cheeseburgers donated by Dick's Drive In Restaurant 🍔 Hungry volunteers + a hard day's work + Dick's burgers = the best possible way to end the day!

We sat in a circle, shared a meal, and swapped highlights. Thank you, Dick's, for feeding our crew and fueling the work.

Our team squeezed 11,180 native trees into two buzzing, rain-soaked days of deliveries earlier this year. Today, those trees have taken root at 27 parks across Washington, from Bellingham to Tacoma.

We’re so proud to celebrate a big milestone in Gold Creek Valley: after 14 years of planning, permitting, and partnership-building, the Gold Creek Valley Restoration Project is officially under construction. Crews broke ground this spring, reshaping Gold Creek Pond and staging boulders, logs, and root wads to rebuild the log jams this creek needs to thrive.

Forterra has been part of this story since 2009, 250 acres were purchased with support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It’s been a joy to watch this vision take shape. Thank you to our partners: Kittitas Conservation Trust, USDA Forest Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Conservation Northwest.
