Africa - environment - farming - food sovereignty - justice

AGRA Watch is a grassroots, Seattle-based campaign of Community Alliance for Global Justice that challenges the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundationโ€™s (BMGF) problematic agricultural development programs in Africa, including the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). In contrast, AGRA Watch supports African-initiated programs rooted in agroecological and indigenous farming practices, socia

l equity, and food sovereignty โ€“ the right of peoples to define their own food and agriculture systems. African communities, farmers, consumers, and civil society organizations already have locally-adapted solutions to the problems they face. AGRA Watch works in solidarity with these groups to resist undemocratic, unaccountable projects pushed from the outside and to build food systems based on sustainability, community and health. AGRA Watch is a program of the Community Alliance for Global Justice, a grass-roots non-profit organization dedicated to local and global justice.

April 17: International Day of Peasant Struggles
Thirty years ago today, 19 rural workers were killed in Brazil protecting their right to farm the land to feed their communities. Their fight has a name: Food Sovereignty. Itโ€™s the belief that communities, not corporations, decide what is grown in their territories, how it is grown and whom it feeds. Today, on International Day of Peasantโ€™s Struggle, we honor their legacy and champion the peasant farmers, fishers, and Indigenous Peoples who work to build sustainable and just food systems on their own terms.

"Over the weekend, writers and journalists were left reeling after Megan McArdle, long-time columnist at The Washington Post, gushed about the benefits of using AI to optimize her writing.

โ€œThink of your chatbot as a combination of an intern, a first-pass editor, and fact-checker,โ€ she advised in a series of tweets that possessed the genteel tone of a telemarketer peddling a fraudulent scheme. While McArdle was emphatic about not using the technology to generate ideas, she praised its ability to take care of the โ€œgrunt work,โ€ which she considers secondary to writing and thinking.

If youโ€™re a media professional whoโ€™s been forced to relinquish the idea of earning a living from the work you love to hate, itโ€™s hard not to feel taunted by this casual admission of corner-cutting from a successful and salaried writer at a legacy publication.
..For all we know, McArdleโ€™s endorsement of AI could be a shameless plug encouraged in a company-wide memo by the ghoulish Jeff Bezos, who seems hellbent on driving the publication that leaked Watergate into extinction. Paid ad or not, it still raises the question of why a writer with the luxury of institutional backing, staff support, and guaranteed income would pawn off the most vital parts of their job to a robot."

We are heartbroken today for the women who have come forward sharing their experiences of abuse and are outraged at the violence they suffered at the hands of Cesar Chavez. We stand in solidarity with them, and hope that they find vindication and justice for the hurt they endured.

We remain firmly rooted in, and proud of, the farmworker community who worked by the millions to move farmworker justice forward. We remain unwavering in our commitment to farmworker organizing, and self-governance, including the right to form and join a union, even in the face of the violence meted out on our communities.

Idolizing leaders overshadows the work of thousands of organizers whose collective effort is our true strength. We are all human and no one person in our movements is so important that they cannot be held accountable for harms they are causing, even figures as revered as Cesar Chavez. Workers understand that his actions disgraced the dignity of all workers seeking to hold up each other with solidarity and unity, for the ultimate goal of a just, dignified, and sustainable food system. Our victories stand on the shoulders of women who, because of patriarchy, have been forced to sacrifice their wellbeing, safety, and at times their dignity to fight for justice for others. The world we are working to make real is one where everyoneโ€™s safety, dignity, and power are actively affirmed and protected.

As an ecofeminist organization we commit to zero tolerance for sexual harassment, assault, and all interpersonal violence in our spaces and processes.

C2C is removing images of Cesar Chavez from our social media, communications and spaces, and will no longer hold him up as a model for justice. We will continue to trust in the courage of people who organize themselves and each other for structural change, and who commit to do so without violating the dignity of another compaรฑera/e/o.

URGENT: Please sign The Oakland Institute's petition to the World Bank to address worsening conditions for communities in Tanzania:

"In April 2025, the Bank released an Action Plan that included pledges from the government that there will be no forced resettlement of the people now considered to be living inside Ruaha National Park; that farming and pastoral livelihoods would be allowed to resume; and that two projects would provide livelihood support for communities.

Over ten months have passed since the plan was announced but the situation on the ground has only worsened. Bank-funded park rangers have killed two more villagers and continue to terrorize communities. Despite explicit assurances that livelihood activities would resume, restrictions remain in place โ€“ directly contradicting the Bankโ€™s own written commitments and pushing thousands into destitution."

Send a message to World Bank President Ajay Banga demanding immediate action, accountability, and reparations for impacted communities!

Our partners at Front and Centered have alerted us to an urgent action item:

Weโ€™re nearing the end of the legislative session which means its budget season down here in Olympia. Budget writers in Olympia released their draft budget plans and while there is much to celebrate, including energy assistance funds and wildfire resilience, we are concerned about proposed cuts to the Healthy Environment for All (HEAL) Act.

Use this link to defend the HEAL Act now! https://win.newmode.net/protect-landmark-environmental-justice-policy

Both the House and the Senate have cut funding for the Environmental Justice Council, agency staff charged with implementing HEAL, and the Environmental Health Disparities Map.

For our supporters who have been tracking our work for a long time youโ€™ll recognize the HEAL Act as our landmark environmental justice legislation that passed in 2021. Thanks to funding from the HEAL Act, the Council, state agencies, and community based organizations have dedicated their time and energy to projects and programs that have reduced health disparities in our most overburdened and polluted communities.

The state is in a precarious budget situation but balancing the budget should not come at the expense of our young environmental justice movement. Weโ€™re asking you today to help us stop these cuts from taking place by contacting budget writers in both the House and Senate.

Take action to protect this landmark legislation: https://win.newmode.net/protect-landmark-environmental-justice-policy
