Al Jazeera: Africa’s Green Revolution Threatens Traditional Foods

Million Belay, Coordinator of AFSA - Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa - and Timothy A. Wise write:

"This year, AGRA, the donor-funded agricultural development initiative formerly known as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, is celebrating its 20th anniversary....We have documented how AGRA’s Green Revolution, with its well-funded promotion of commercial seeds, fertilisers and other inputs, has failed to spur the “productivity revolution” promised by its founders.

Worse still, its promotion of monocultures, such as maize, has led to the massive expansion of land dedicated to them. At the same time, more resilient and nutritious local crops, such as millet, are losing ground.

The promotion of monocultures is hurting the production of much more nutritious and climate-resistant traditional crops.

Right to Know reporting on the failures of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) 20 years & millions later:

"The AGRA effort drew more than $1.5 billion in donations (two-thirds from the Gates Foundation), as African governments spent an estimated $1 billion a year in subsidies for fertilizer and other inputs in AGRA’s target countries.

“The Green Revolution has failed Africa,” the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa said in a new report. “Twenty years is long enough to judge the Green Revolution model by its results. The evidence does not justify another decade of the same priorities at greater scale.”

The report is based on an August 2026 working paper by Timothy A. Wise, senior research fellow at Tufts Global Development and Environment Institute, that reviews 18 years of United Nations and World Bank data from 2006 through 2024."

AGRA promised to double African crop yields. Two decades and $1.5 billion later, new data shows yield growth lagged and hunger climbed 58%.

NEW REPORT by AFSA: AFSA’s new assessment compares AGRA’s original promises with eighteen years of evidence from its 13 focus countries and concludes that the model has failed to deliver the expected transformation. Since 2006, the number of chronically undernourished people across those countries rose 58 percent, fertiliser use more than doubled and cultivated land expanded 46 percent, while staple crop yield growth slowed compared with the period before AGRA. The report contrasts these outcomes with Senegal, which was not an AGRA focus country and cut hunger by half while maintaining more diverse farming systems. AFSA calls for agricultural finance to shift towards farmer managed seeds, soil health, diversified production and agroecology.

Twenty years ago, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa launched with a promise: commercial seed, synthetic fertiliser and better market access would
