20 air miles from Seattle sits the largest concentration of deployed nuclear weapons on earth at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. 81 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these nuclear weapons exist in the thousands, and are multitudes larger than the bombs dropped on Japan by the United States.

Congress and the Pentagon are abandoning international arms control agreements and moving to build new nuclear weapons, with a goal of producing 200 plutonium bomb cores a year by 2030, and delivering newer and deadlier nuclear-armed submarines to Puget Sound by 2032.

Under Fire in Eastern Washington: Why Wildfire Season is a Climate and Health Crisis - Over the weekend, expansive wildfires ravaged Eastern Washington, cementing this season as one of the worst on record for our state. At Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR), our hearts and minds remain with every person, family, and community affected by this ongoing disaster.

The human cost of these fires is staggering. Thousands of homes, livelihoods, and lives have been permanently altered. The evacuation of Spokane’s VA hospital highlights a dangerous reality: climate events directly threaten the critical medical infrastructure required to care for communities during emergencies.

In times like these, health professionals and local communities must step up to care for one another, manage immediate risks, and address the root causes driving these disasters.

The Navy uses about 70,550 gallons of jet fuel for Seafair, spewing around 670 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in one weekend. This is the equivalent of the amount of CO2 emitted by over 140 single-family homes for an entire year. “The environmental and health impacts of the Blue Angels are something our community can no longer ignore,” wrote members of the Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility last year. “Military airshows burn massive amounts of jet fuel during test flights and performances, spewing air pollution directly into our communities. The aircraft produce 110-decibel noise that can permanently damage hearing, especially in children. For some combat veterans and refugees, the sounds and sights of military jets can trigger PTSD and traumatic memories. ”

The Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility is calling on Seafair to make this the last year for the flight demonstration squadron, citing concerns about jet fumes impacting the climate and people's lung health. "Our message is, ‘Blue Angels, thank you for your service. I’m a 30-year service member myself, but it’s time to move on,'" Dr. Breck Lebegue stated. "Let’s have some electric airplanes, for example, or some healthier things to celebrate Seafair."
