Mount Baker Mix-Use Affordable Housing Project Moves Forward

A long-awaited affordable housing project led by El Centro de la Raza and Mercy Housing Northwest is taking shape at the former University of Washington laundry site and an adjacent parking lot near Mount BakerStation, at Rainier Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr. Way South.

The Mount Baker Mix-Use Affordable Housing Project will bring 239 affordable homes across two buildings, with the majority designed for families and larger households. The development will also include two parks, commercial space, and a new home for the UW Rainier Valley Early Learning Center, providing affordable childcare and preschool for approximately 160 children.

Located just steps from Link light rail, the project is designed to connect affordable housing with transit, community services, early learning and neighborhood amenities.

As El Centro de la Raza Associate Director Miguel Maestas shared with The Seattle Times: “We want to provide affordable housing for families, so they can afford to live in Seattle.”

Construction is now underway, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2028.

We’re proud to help transform this site into a place where families can build stability, opportunity and community—right here in the heart of the Rainier Valley.

A day with the 12s!

On Tuesday, July 28, El Centro de la Raza staff and young people from our Youth Services Programs had the incredible opportunity to join the Seattle Seahawks Training Camp Community Tabling Opportunity at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Athletic Center.

As proud Seattle Seahawks fans, being part of Training Camp was more than an exciting day around football — it was an opportunity to bring our young people into a space where community, culture, opportunity and belonging come together.

Our youth got to experience the energy of Seahawks Training Camp, connect with the community, meet Los Aztecas, and see some of the players up close, including Cooper Kupp, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Sam Darnold, Abraham Lucas, Charles Cross, Byron Murphy II and Ernest Jones IV.

At El Centro de la Raza, we believe young people deserve opportunities to see themselves in every space — to build relationships, discover new possibilities and know that they belong.

That’s what Building the Beloved Community looks like: showing up, connecting across cultures and generations, and creating experiences that inspire the next generation.

And yes… we’re big Seahawks fans! 💙💚🏈

Thank you to the Seattle Seahawks for welcoming El Centro de la Raza and our youth to Training Camp and for making community a part of the Seahawks experience.

Introducing Our 2026 Roberto Felipe Maestas Legacy Award Honoree: WAISN

We are proud to honor the WA Immigrant Solidarity Network -Red de Solidaridad de Inmigrantes en WA (WAISN), as the 2026 Roberto Felipe Maestas Legacy Award recipients, recognizing their remarkable dedication to justice, equity, and community empowerment.

As the largest immigrant justice network in Washington State, the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) convenes a transnational and feminist solidarity coalition of more than 700 organizations and individuals across 39 counties to protect and advance the power and rights of all immigrant and refugee communities, including undocumented immigrants, mixed-status families, trans and q***r immigrants. At WAISN, transnational and feminist means convening a multiethnic, multiracial, multifaith, intergenerational coalition to advance systems change by developing forced migrants’ leadership, driving the state’s leading deportation defense work, and advancing the rights and protections of all Washingtonians, regardless of immigration status, at state, county, and city levels.
