A closer look at the Mount Baker Redevelopment Project groundbreaking ceremony on October 15, 2026.

This milestone reflects a shared commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive community that honors the rich cultural heritage of the Mount Baker neighborhood. With 434 affordable homes, a new early learning campus, and community spaces, this project will help create opportunities for families to live, learn, and thrive.

As the project moves forward, continued community engagement will help ensure the development reflects the voices, priorities, and aspirations of the people who call this neighborhood home.

Yesterday, we celebrated a major milestone in building the Beloved Community with the groundbreaking of the Mount Baker Redevelopment Project.

Together with our partners, El Centro de la Raza is helping create 434 affordable homes, a new early learning campus, and welcoming community spaces in the heart of South Seattle, next to the Mount Baker Light Rail Station.

This project represents years of collaboration and a shared commitment to housing stability, educational opportunity, and a future where families can thrive. Rooted in the voices and rich cultural heritage of the Mount Baker neighborhood, this development reflects what is possible when we work together to build a more just and equitable community.

Thank you to Gov. Bob Ferguson, Mayor Katie Wilson, UW College of Education Dean Mia Tuan, and Mercy Housing Northwest Acting President Colin Morgan-Cross for joining El Centro de la Raza Executive Director Estela Ortega, Rainier Valley preschoolers, and community partners to mark this important occasion.

We are building more than housing. We are investing in families, strengthening community, and creating opportunities for generations to come.

54 YEARS OF BUILDING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY

Founded on October 11, 1972, El Centro de la Raza (The Center for People of All Races) began with a nonviolent occupation of an abandoned school building on Seattle’s Beacon Hill, led by a multiracial coalition of community members, including Chicano and Latino adult basic education students, and rooted in the civil rights, faith, and anti-war movements. Their collective action, courage, and vision for a more just and equitable society laid the foundation for an enduring community institution.

More than five decades later, El Centro de la Raza continues to advance that vision through affordable housing, small business development, child care, and 43 programs and services supporting individuals and families across King County.

As we honor our history and look toward the future, we remain grounded in the values that guide our work: dignity, justice, equity, cultural identity, and collective care. These values strengthen our relationships, unite our communities, and sustain our commitment to a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

For 54 years, our strength has come from the people, partnerships, and communities who continue this work together. We honor the vision of those who came before us while carrying their legacy forward for generations to come.
