Last week, Splash team members from nine countries came together in Zambia for our annual retreat.

We met where our newest work is underway. With our partner BORDA Zambia, Splash is installing infrastructure in public schools and training teachers, working toward every public school in Chipata, Kitwe, Lusaka, and Ndola: 436 schools and 789,000 students, one in ten schoolchildren in Zambia, by 2030.

Over the week, the team gathered at our Zambia country office, welcomed colleagues and partners, visited a school alongside government partners, and planned the next chapter together. Thank you to the Government of Zambia, including the Ministry of Education, for its partnership, and to the Splash Zambia team and our partners for hosting us.

Today is Global Handwashing Day, a chance to celebrate the healthy habits children are building and look ahead to the work underway in Zambia.

During Project WISE Phase I, Splash donors helped install 3,957 handwashing stations in Kolkata and Addis Ababa. Stations built at a child’s height, bright colors, and mirrors helped make handwashing an inviting part of the school day, alongside hygiene education and student leadership.

In Kolkata, handwashing with soap before lunch rose from 25% to 90%, with the improvement sustained beyond 18 months.

Now we’re building on that experience in Zambia. Through Project WISE (WASH in Schools for Everyone) Phase II, Splash is working alongside the Zambian government and its key implementation partner, BORDA Zambia, toward a shared goal: safe water, sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual health services in every public school across Chipata, Kitwe, Lusaka, and Ndola.

BORDA Zambia’s school activities are bringing handwashing awareness to life through learning and friendly competition. Together, we’re helping more children turn what they learn into habits they practice every day.

Global Handwashing Day is tomorrow.

A mirror above a handwashing station can give children another reason to stop, spend time, and wash their hands.

Splash pairs mirrors with bright colors and stations designed for children. Our hygiene approach draws on the Behavior Centered Design framework from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which uses the surroundings and everyday routines to encourage healthy habits.

This approach helped shape our work in Ethiopia and India. Now those lessons are informing Project WISE Phase II in Zambia, where Splash is working alongside the Zambian government and its key implementation partner, BORDA Zambia, to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene services in public schools across four cities.

Tomorrow, we’ll share how a $15 gift can add a mirror to a school handwashing station.

Global Handwashing Day is in two days.

Helping children build a handwashing habit starts with making it easy to practice. Splash stations are built at a child’s height, painted in bright colors, and placed near where students eat and use the toilet.

Hygiene clubs and student ambassadors help make handwashing part of the school day. In Kolkata, handwashing with soap among students in kindergarten through grade 4 rose from 15% to 83%.

As Project WISE Phase II moves forward in Zambia, Splash and our partners are building on these lessons while adapting hygiene education to local schools. The goal is lasting routines, supported by facilities children can use and school communities that can keep them working.

Global Handwashing Day is in three days, and our partner BORDA Zambia is bringing handwashing awareness into schools through learning and friendly competition.

Their upcoming “Spell It Right, WASH It Right” spelling bee will bring together learners from five primary schools, helping them carry a message beyond the competition: washing hands with soap helps protect our health and the health of those around us.

In Kolkata schools supported by Splash donors, handwashing with soap before lunch rose from 25% to 90%, with the improvement sustained beyond 18 months.

An 8th-grade girl in Addis Ababa taught her younger brothers what she learned about handwashing at school. Before, they washed only before eating, "just to meet an obligation." Now they wash whenever their hands are not clean.

When a school has clean water and teachers who lead hygiene lessons and clubs, a student can carry those lessons home. This is how lasting change spreads.

This week, Splash visited one of the schools where we work in Zambia, together with colleagues from government and our partner BORDA Zambia.

It was a chance to see the work in action and to hear directly from the students and teachers who use these facilities every day.

We demonstrated the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, talked through how they are used and maintained, and discussed what it takes to keep them working for children and school communities over the long term. Infrastructure is one part of the work. Lasting change depends on strong systems, local ownership and partnership with government, schools and communities.

Together with government and BORDA Zambia, Splash is working to reach 436 schools across Chipata, Kitwe, Lusaka and Ndola by 2030, serving 789,000 school children, one in ten in Zambia.

Today is World Teachers' Day. Thank you to the teachers in Splash schools.

Once the infrastructure and programs are in place, teachers become the champions of lasting behavior change. They continue the message, lead the clubs where children learn to lead their peers, and instill the lessons that carry healthy habits through the classroom, into homes, and into communities.

✔️In Kolkata, handwashing with soap among the youngest students rose from 15% to 83% and stayed there.

✔️In Addis Ababa, 43% of families learned handwashing from their own child.
In Zambia, teachers in 407 schools are being trained now.

Mariyamawit is 14, loves math, and dreams of becoming a professional accountant.

She is also a leader in her school's Gender Club. After learning that menstruation is natural and nothing to be ashamed of, she chose to share that knowledge with other students. Twice each week, she helps answer questions, provide reassurance, and connect girls with the supplies they need.

"I am proud of helping and supporting other female students."

Access to menstrual health and hygiene is a matter of human rights, and it starts with information students can trust.
