Thank you to all our volunteers who stopped by ASDF Studio in Chinatown-International District last Saturday!

We got so many ribbon and snack leis done thanks to you all :)

We hope to see many of the recipients next Saturday, May 23rd, during the 4th Annual FCS Community Graduation Celebration, where they will receive these leis and many other goodies as our way of appreciating their commitments to their educations!

How did you all spend your Mother's Day, kapamilya?

Since it was just this weekend, we spent Friday talking about the moms present in our lives with the kids. Together, we brainstormed traits our moms have and things they do, and how these come together to make our moms they way they are!

Hey there, kapamilya!

It's ELA week, so we are doing a ton of storytimes with the kids. Maybe we will see you in a few weeks on Sunday, May 17, here at the Filipino Community of Seattle! That day, we are hosting AANHPI Journeys: Stories of Family and Belonging, a children's literacy event where we are inviting local children's book authors to read with kids and sign or sell their books!

🚩 May-be this month will end on a high note, considering that the school year is right about to end kapamilya!

🌺📆 This month will cover four weeks, one for ELA, another for math, then science, and finally another culture week!

📚 Week 1: Read It and Weep
Lots of reading practice with the kids this week, especially the little ones! In addition, we will be learning about Cinco de Mayo and participating in Mother’s Day-centered activities.

💱 Week 2: Money Talks, Filipino Money Sings
Mostly a typical math week, but in lieu of a typical Tagalog Wednesday, we will learn about Filipino currency (the peso) and how you would ask to purchase something.

📡 Week 3: Adding to the Entropy
Catapults, maps, sounds like we are on a medieval battlefield! But in reality, we will be playing around with different gadgets and gizmos to satisfy our engineering cravings

🐝 Week 4: 4(Filipino)Culture
Lastly, we are packing this last week of May with all kinds of cultural tidbits, like Filipino foods, Filipino games, and… Jollibee?

May 22, 2026 (FCS Community Graduation Celebration prep)
May 25, 2026 (Memorial Day)

The Filipino Community of Seattle would like to extend our deepest condolences to Kai Dana Sorem, a cherished member of Seattle’s Filipino community.

Kai Sorem was a young woman who lived here in Seattle, frequently volunteering with our Senior Zumba fitness program and our summer youth program, and acted as one of the advisors to the Filipino American Student Association at Rainier Beach High School. She was also known as a music instructor, part-time worker, and so much more. These experiences shaped who she was and inspired her to return home to the Philippines to learn more about the struggles of common folk, contribute to the community, and create change for future generations of Filipinos at home and abroad.

She was among the civilian casualties in the recent violence in Toboso, Negros Occidental, in the Philippines that occurred between April 19 and 20, 2026.

We extend our deepest condolences to Kai’s family, friends, and all impacted by her loss. She loved music and spending time with the elders here at FCS, who came to know her well. We will fondly remember her as a gentle, kind, and passionate leader in our community.

Hello YDP and FCS friends, families, and community members,

We are searching for TWO (2) college-aged interns to work with us this summer by supporting staff to facilitate daily activities and enrichment for our cohort of students! As an intern with the Batibot & Bagets Summer Youth Program, you would be assisting us with the kids, learning about program management and curriculum development, going on field trips, serving out snacks, and so much more. You will receive an up-close look at what goes into youth program development and have fun while you're at it!

Our summer program is eight (8) weeks long, between June 29 and August 21, and intern hours will be between 10am-3pm each day. The expected hourly rate for interns is $23/hr.

Sunlight eventually fades kapamilya... but what if didn't?

Cyanotypes are treated papers or other media that capture pictures or impressions through a photochemical process: sunlight reacts with iron-based ammonium salts, oxidizing them and producing an insoluble, deep blue called Prussian blue.

Which is to say, if you make a pattern with blocks, or leaves, or other objects on the paper, place it into strong, direct sunlight for 1-3 minutes, it will leave a sort of shadow, permanently cast onto the blue of the cyanotype after it is developed in a simple rinse of water.

Saturday, May 2nd, we are hosting a lei-making party at ASDF Studio at 511a Maynard Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104! It will be from 11am-4pm and there will be light refreshments available for volunteers who stop by.

What do you know about the geography of the Philippines? Or the culture kapamilya?

This past week, we reviewed some of the basic geography of the Philippines, like how it is an archipelago of over 7000 islands on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making for a very lively, dynamic landscape often affected by things like earthquakes, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions.

Since it is a tropical country, that also affects what people wear! We talked about what people might wear in a very hot, humid country, and some traditional wear like baro't saya and barong tagalog are often lighter or more flowy to help people stay cool.
