With Hunger Action Month nearing a close, we remember that far too often many individuals and families are forced to choose between their next meal or keeping a roof over their head.

If you'd like to play a role in fighting hunger in your community, visit the below map of emergency food programs in Seattle and King County and consider:
✅ Volunteering at a food bank.
✅ Donating to a local program.
✅ Sharing the resource with your network.

September is Hunger Action Month.

Seattle’s map of Emergency Food Resources is a designed to help people in need to find free meals and groceries. It's also a great way to identify local food organizations and to honor Hunger Action Month by volunteering and/or making donations!

An unexpected expense can push a household out of their homes and into homelessness.

If you or someone you know is facing unforeseen costs associated with employment, education, or basic needs, please check out the below resource.

Need help paying for an unexpected expense? King County’s Emergency Financial Assistance program may be able to help.

The program can help eligible King County residents with:

🎓 Education - book fees, transportation and other school costs
💼 Employment - permit or license fees, job search costs and transportation
🛒 Basic needs - groceries, healthcare, gas and other essential expenses

To qualify, you must be 18 or older, live in King County, show proof of need and income, and be enrolled in Resource Navigation Services.

Rent assistance is not available through this program.

Seattle City Council recently passed an ordinance that will require landlords to outline various leasing costs in rental and renewal agreements including:
- monthly rent
- mandatory and optional fees
- utility costs included in the rent and those covered by the tenant

The ordinance takes effect July 2027 and may help bring transparency and protection for tenants from unfair leasing practices that increase living costs in the city. Read more below.

The new transparency ordinance, effective July 2027, eliminates administrative service charges, pet rent and package fees and requires upfront pricing for tenants.

Announcement 📣 UCEF is increasing its rate for emergency financial assistance from $250 to $300. This adjustment is much-needed as living costs in Seattle remain out-of-reach for many residents.

Until housing and services meet individual demand, people will continue to fall into homelessness.
