Freeway Park Association

Freeway Park Association The Freeway Park Association has been building community and improving Freeway Park since 1993.

The Freeway Park Association is a 501c3 membership based and community driven non-profit organization who has been working alongside the Seattle Parks Department since 1993 to activate and advocate for Freeway Park. In partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, we have made great strides toward the enrichment of our Park and our community and we seek to engage our neighbors in a participatory dialogue about the future of the Park, the Neighborhood and the City.

We’ll leave you today with this moment of peace and the hope that the park will continue to thrive with a community of stewards like YOU at the helm. Good night. Love ya! 😘

It’s hard to imagine this scene back in 1976 when the park first opened - but if you know Lawrence Halprin, you know he imagined this park as a place for play and exploration, movement and meetings, “happenings” between neighbors and people just passing through.
💦
Freeway Park is Seattle’s most unique urban park and one of PBS’s “10 parks that changed America”. Designed by Lawrence Halprin & Assoc (led by Angela Danadjieva) to reconnect Seattle neighborhoods across I5, it is widely considered a masterwork of American design and a precedent-setting park that single-handedly defined a new land-use typology for cities everywhere. However, despite its credentials, Freeway Park is still one of Seattle’s best-kept secrets, a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Help bring this national and local treasure to life on its 50th Anniversary with your Give Big support!

Help us CELEBRATE Freeway Park’s 50th Anniversary! Freeway Park opened on July 4th, 1976, the result of years of grassroots organizing, visionary planning and innovative design. Now, 50 years later the park is a time honored icon, neighborhood connector, community event space and leafy refuge in Downtown Seattle. What will the next 50 years bring? Join us today to give this park the love it deserves.

Your funding will help Freeway Park Association to produce a robust summer of arts events, public tours and community gatherings, honoring Freeway Park’s historic legacy and celebrating the communities united by this singular, downtown park. Link in bio.

🚲
Heap, a Seattle-based performance troupe co-founded by Kara Beadle, Andy Zacek, and several collaborators. HeapRide is a series of three 3-hour guided group bicycle rides featuring pop-up performances along the routes.
🚲
From behind their handlebars, audiences will be invited to experience Heap’s “absurdist” form of dance storytelling. A zany narrative will be revealed at frequent performance pit-stops, encouraging audience riders to continue pedaling to each destination. The ride will target new cyclists, using art as an avenue of accessibility to help introduce riders to their local bike shops, and show them safe and fun routes around town.
🚲
This project is funded in part by the through Kara Beadle’s awarded CityArtist Grant and is made possible with support from .
🚲
This event is free and open all. FPA thanks our many supporters including Public Free Access and Preservation Sustained Support. Thanks also to our partners who are hosting this event in Jim Ellis Plaza adjacent to Freeway Park.
