DAY 25 — Move Before You Learn

Brain Education: Physical activity engages the brain and body and can be a useful transition before learning. Feeling foggy? Get up and move!

Try It: Before homework, reading, or studying, do 3–5 minutes of movement.

Move → transition → learn.

The research on the connection between physical activity and learning is stronger than most teachers know. A guide to brain breaks, kinesthetic learning,...

DAY 24 — Sleep & Your Brain

Brain Education: Sleep supports memory, learning, attention, and many other brain functions. Toxins get cleaned out during sleep as well. Truly an amazing function of our brain!

Try It: Ask your family, “What helps me get good sleep?” Choose one healthy bedtime habit.

Your brain keeps working while you sleep.

Sleep is one of the most mysterious and essential aspects of human life. Every night, we surrender to it, closing our eyes and drifting into a state that ...

DAY 23 — Brain Break: Coordination Challenge

Brain Education: Coordinated movement requires different brain systems to work together. For years we have been teaching students movements like tree pose and one leg balance pose to improve focus and to help them LOCK IN. This type of movement does the trick!

Brain Break: Try tossing a ball, dribbling, jumping rope, or alternating hand movements.

Challenge your coordination. Try these:

DAY 22 — Brain Speed vs. Brain Accuracy

Brain Education: Fast isn’t always better. Learning often requires slowing down enough to process information accurately.

Try It: Do a familiar task deliberately slowly.

Slow down. Think it through.

Week THREE of our series…
30 days of Neuroplasticity

DAY 21 — Mistakes Are Data

Brain Education: When something doesn’t work, your brain receives information that can help you adjust your next attempt.

Try It: Instead of saying “I got it wrong,” ask, “What did I learn?”

Mistakes can become information for the next attempt. And bonus…when we correct the error, dopamine is released!

The nervous system, which includes the brain, the spinal cord, and all the connections to the body’s organs, is the foundation of every experience, emotion, and behavior we have. Fortunately, unlike other species, we human beings have the ability to modify our nervous system through specific, cons...

DAY 20 — Brain Break: Mirror Me

Brain Education: Watching and copying movements involves attention, coordination, and motor planning. Dr. Lori Desautels, professor of neuroscience at Butler University, emphasizes the importance of mirroring in educational settings, particularly in fostering emotional connections and understanding among students. This technique enhances engagement and promotes a supportive learning environment, allowing educators to respond effectively to students' emotional needs.

Brain Break: Partner up. One person moves slowly while the other mirrors the movements.

Watch. Think. Move. Communicate. Participate!

DAY 19 — Teach Someone

Brain Education: Explaining something requires your brain to organize and retrieve information. It also requires you to be able to explain a concept clearly, in the simplest way. Think of it in terms of this phrase, “Explain it to me like I’m 5 years old.”

Try It: Teach someone one thing you learned today.

When you teach it, you strengthen your understanding.

Picture this: It’s Monday and Ms. D’Angelo, a seventh-grade science teacher in the South Bronx, gives her students a homework assignment about food chains that is due in one week. The assignment asks students to teach a family member about this concept by completing a model food chain together.

DAY 18 — Make Connections

Brain Education: New information becomes easier to understand when your brain connects it to something you already know.

Try It: When learning something new, ask:
“What does this remind me of?”

Connect new information to old information. Check out the link for some simple examples:

Applying knowledge from the past to newly-learned information helps to enhance cognitive flexibility and inform behavior in future situations.

DAY 17 — Your Brain Needs a Break

Brain Education: Brains aren’t designed to focus intensely without interruption for long periods. Specifically, if you’re working with children, performance improves with a break every 30 minutes or so. Brain breaks during lessons prevent fatigue, help with transitions, or provide a mental break during challenging activities.

Brain Break: After a period of work, stand up, stretch, walk, or move for 2–5 minutes.

A brain break isn’t wasted time!!

Brain breaks give students a chance to shift their focus and return ready to work and learn. Learn how to use brain breaks in the classroom. Download a printable list of brain breaks to try.

Back for week 3!!
30 Days of Neuroplasticity

DAY 16 — Attention Is a Brain Skill

Brain Education: Attention helps your brain select what information to focus on. Often we think of multitasking as a smart way to get our work done. However, working this way can lead to a reduction in efficiency, the opposite of what we are trying to do!
Check out the article from Cleveland clinic for more details on attention.

Try It: Set a timer for 5 minutes and work on one task without switching.

Practice focusing your brain.

When we think we’re multitasking, most often we aren’t really doing two things at once, but instead, individual actions in rapid succession.
