As this Juneteenth comes to a close, I find myself reflecting not only on freedom gained, but on the people who helped make that freedom possible.
Today, I want to honor Maureen Fortey, pictured here among friends and fellow advocates Conference. The story of freedom is not only told through historic figures whose names appear in textbooks. It is also written by the countless women and men who quietly dedicate their lives to serving others, standing for justice, and helping move communities forward.
Every movement needs its freedom fighters—not just those who march in front of the cameras, but those who organize, mentor, encourage, and continue the work when the spotlight has faded. They carry the torch from one generation to the next, ensuring that the struggle for equality and opportunity never loses its voice.
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not merely an event in history. It is a responsibility passed from one generation to another. Because of people like Maureen Fortey and so many others, that responsibility continues to be honored today.
On this Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, remember sacrifice, and express our gratitude to those who paved the way for others to follow.
Thank you, Maureen Moe Forté
We honor you today.
