CANOPY GUARDIANS: EPISODE 3

It looks unique, but the Chinese Tallow, or "Popcorn Tree" is a coastal Georgia ecological nightmare.

While those white, popcorn-like seeds and heart-shaped leaves look pretty, this invasive species is actively destroying our local ecosystem.

100,000 Seeds: That is how many a single mature tree can drop a year, spreading aggressively via birds and water. Its fallen leaves change the soil chemistry, making it toxic for native plants to survive.

Spotting these invaders early is key to protecting our urban forest. Look for the distinct heart-shaped leaves and white seeds. Let’s keep Georgia’s forests native. Let us know in the comments where you've spotted some Chinese Tallow!

Have you spotted a mimosa tree?

While its fluffy pink flowers may look beautiful, mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) is an invasive tree that can spread quickly to roadsides, stream banks, and old fields.

🔎 How to identify it:
• Delicate-looking, fern-like leaves
• Showy, fragrant pink flowers in early summer
• Flat seed pods up to 6 inches long in late summer
• Often grows with multiple trunks and reaches 10–50 feet tall

Originally introduced from Asia as an ornamental tree, mimosa can be difficult to remove once established due to its long-lived seeds and ability to vigorously re-sprout.

Ever wanted to know the stories behind Savannah’s breathtaking historic canopy? Grab a friend and join us for an evening Canopy Crawl through the heart of downtown!

Led by an ISA Certified Arborist and expert plant educator, this beginner-friendly walk will take us through Savannah's iconic squares to talk all things urban forestry. You’ll learn how to identify local tree species, dive into the history of our famous giants, and chat about how we can protect our urban forest for generations to come.

Help Restore Ambuc Park!

Savannah’s urban forest needs your hands! Join us for a rewarding Friday morning of community stewardship as we team up to protect and restore one of our vital local greenspaces.

Invasive plant species crowd out native plants, reduce critical biodiversity, and impact the overall health of our beautiful tree canopy. Together, we can make a real difference for this community park!

What to expect:
Whether you are a seasoned environmental steward or a complete beginner, this workday is for you! You'll work right alongside our team to identify and safely remove common invasive species, while learning practical skills you can bring back to your own neighborhood.

All tools, gloves, and expert guidance will be provided.
Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

The hunt is officially ON!

Clue #1 is officially live for our Tree-O-Cache hunt!

For the next week, we’ll be releasing daily riddles to guide you to a hidden cache nestled somewhere in our city's beautiful urban canopy. Once a cache is discovered, we’ll announce the winner right here! If a riddle stumps everyone, we’ll keep dropping hints until it’s found. Happy hunting!

EVENT POSTPONEMENT

Due to the threat of severe weather tonight, the Savannah Tree Foundation is postponing our Vines and Wines tonight.

Another invasive clean-up day is officially in the books!

We had an amazing time clearing out the bad to make room for the good, and we couldn’t have done it without our incredible community. A massive shoutout to our friends at and all the wonderful volunteers who showed up from all over Savannah to lend a hand.

Our urban forest is breathing a little easier today thanks to your hard work!
