The cultural and social history of Georgia and the South is being brought back to life, as a non-profit charitable service, by The Beehive Foundation, which is reissuing and continuing the books of the award-winning Beehive Press. This collection has been called “a milestone in the publishing of books on Georgia and the South, books that are artistic, important and beautiful.”

The Beehive Press o

ffers a shelf of some forty handsome, thoughtful and important volumes. These books have been selected and edited with a national spirit enriched by affection for the South. Designed with unusual care and printed in small editions, they include stimulating introductions and evocative illustrations, when appropriate. The Beehive Press offers a proud record of regional life and a useful source for the study of a distinctive aspect of American history. Born in Georgia and educated at Harvard College, Mills Bee Lane IV founded the Beehive Press in 1970, when he was 28 years old. He wrote or edited nearly 60 books about Southern cultural and social history. His chief scholarly work, Architecture of the Old South, is a monumental 10-volume series that studies historic buildings in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, and Louisiana. Lane was also an authority on the history of the building arts in Savannah, his ancestral home. A champion of that port city’s unique town plan, he saved and restored many important 19th-century buildings within its National Historic Landmark District.

In recognition of Black History Month, we invite you to explore one of our best selling titles: Slavery Time when I was Chillun Down on Marster’s Plantation. This book features interviews with former slaves that were conducted in the 1930s by field workers from the Federal Writers Project. These factual accounts provide valuable insights into a significant and poignant aspect of our shared history as Americans. Additionally, the volume includes late 19th century photographs, depicting plantation life in Georgia. Link in bio to purchase.
